CONMEBOL opens disciplinary proceedings against River Plate following Copa Libertadores chaos

CONMEBOL has opened disciplinary proceedings against River Plate in the wake of this past weekend's Copa Libertadores chaos.

Following a 2-2 first-leg draw in the final against rivals Boca Juniors, River Plate were set to host the second-leg decider on Saturday.

However, that match was postponed after supporters attackers Boca Juniors' bus before the game, injuring several players just hours before kick-off.

Now, the federation has opened a case against River Plate, who will have 24 hours to respond to CONMEBOL's notice.

"The South American Football Confederation - CONMEBOL - announced that the Disciplinary Unit has opened a disciplinary process ex officio against Club Atlético River Plate, due to incidents that occurred on November 24, 2018, the date that the second leg match of the CONMEBOL Copa Libertadores 2018 was scheduled," the federation announced in a statement.

"The Club has been notified and has a period of 24 hours from the notification to respond to the allegations and present the evidence that in its defense it deems appropriate."

The federation has yet to confirm what will become of the second leg, which was originally postponed to Sunday following the attack.

The fixture was due to be played on Saturday but was eventually rescheduled for 24 hours later following an attack by River fans on Boca's bus on the way to El Monumental.

Boca players Pablo Perez and Gonzalo Lamardo were treated at a hospital following the incident, which saw projectiles launched at the vehicle, smashing several windows.

On Sunday, though, it was confirmed that the match would be played at a later date with CONMEBOL organising a meeting among all parties on Tuesday at its headquarters in Asuncion, Paraguay to determine a new date and time.

It remains to be seen where and when the match will be played, although the city of Genoa has stated that it would like to play host to the match should it be moved from Argentina.
