The current Ajax Cape Town assistant coach believes the Bafana Bafana No.1 stood head and shoulders above his peers

Former Mamelodi Sundowns goalkeeper Calvin Marlin says Kaizer Chiefs goalkeeper Itumeleng Khune is the right candidate to win the Goalkeeper of the Season award.

Marlin was speaking just before the Premier Soccer League (PSL) announces the nominees for the end of the season awards on Monday.

The assistant coach at Ajax Cape Town believes that the Bafana Bafana No.1 shot stopper did well for Amakhosi.

Marlin has tipped the Soweto giants’ skipper to be named as the best in the league, but admitted he will find it diffuclt against the likes of Denis Onyango and Maritzburg United’s Richard Ofori.

The awards will take place at Sandton Convention Centre on Tuesday night‚ May 29‚ with the nominees to be named on Monday.

Moreover, Khune has impressed this term leading his club to a third place finish and keeping 16 clean sheets in 27 starts in the league.

On the other hand, Khune claimed a number of man-of-the-match awards for an off-form Amakhosi‚ who largely owe their third placing to their keeper.

A look at the Brazilians’ net minder, Onyango kept 12 clean sheets in 25 starts for the champions and remains a strong contender.

For the Team of Choice’s number one, Ofori was instrumental in United conceding the second-least goals in the PSL‚ 23‚ after Chiefs on 22 as Sundowns conceded 24‚ the third-least.

“It’s always tough because when you go on stats alone you don’t really see things like what were the key saves and things like that‚”Marlin said to TimesLive.

“I remember when I won it [Goalkeeper of the Season] in 2006 I had actually not done a lot in the season in terms of amount of saves,” he recalled.

“But if you look at ‘Itu’ [Khune] generally I think he does stand out head and shoulders‚ then it would probably be Denis‚ and then Richard would probably fill in there somewhere,” he added.

“I mean‚ Richard looks a bit awkward and clumsy at times‚ but as a team Maritzburg did well this year,” he continued.

“But if you look in general play‚ I don’t think Denis had as good a season as he did the year before,” said Marlin.

“He conceded a few goals that you might have said in better form he would have saved,” said the former SuperSport United keeper.

“But in general if Itu is not playing for Chiefs they are going to struggle‚ because he’s made some key saves.”
