Baroka release former Kaizer Chiefs striker Lewis Macha and four others

Baroka FC have confirmed the release of five players which include two former players who were previously on the books of Kaizer Chiefs.

The Limpopo-based outfit recently appointed former Zambian coach Wedson Nyirenda as the club’s new head coach following the dismissal of MacDonald Makhubedu towards the end of the season, and it seems that the club are wasting no time in relieving themselves of deadwood as they look to avoid a repeat of their 2017/18 Premier Soccer League (PSL) struggles.

While the past season began promisingly for Baroka, a period of instability which ensued which saw several players leave the club and coach Kgoloko Thobejane sacked left the club in a rather precarious situation.

However, Baroka were able to avoid another PSL relegation play-off dogfight as they narrowly escaped. But this has left several players to be on the lookout for a new club ahead of the new season.

Most notably, former Amakhosi striker Lewis Macha headlines the list of outgoing players alongside another familiar name in Punch Masenamela. Macha played just nine games for Bakgaga scoring just two goals, while Masenamela made just 12 appearances all season.

This will come as a setback to the experienced former Mamelodi Sundowns and Glamour Boys defender Masenamela in particular, who joined Baroka in February of 2017 after he was released by fellow Limpopo side Polokwane City.

Meanwhile, the duo are said to be joined by centre-back Mzwanele Mahashe, left-back Khutso Mohwatseleng and 25-year-old Rethabile Soso who all have also been shown the door.

The club subsequently took to Twitter on Thursday to confirm their latest departures.
