Balestier Khalsa edge out Home United on penalties to secure third place in Singapore Cup

Balestier Khalsa once again showed how they were unable to hold on to a lead as they twice allowed Home United to equalise.

However, unlike their semi-final encounter against Brunei DPMM FC this match proved to be a happy ending for The Tigers as they managed to beat Home 5-4 on penalties to clinch third place in the RHB Singapore Cup, after the tie had ended 2-2 at the Jalan Besar Stadium.

Marko Kraljević’s men had Hazzuwan Halim and Keegan Linderboom to thank for giving them a 2-0 lead in the first half. Hazzuwan would score through a penalty after after Huzaifah Aziz was felled by Shahrin Saberin.

Linderboom’s goal in the 37th minute would also see star man Hazzuwan be involved as the latter cut back a delightful pass for the New Zealander to thump in the ball into the back of the net.

Home would reply by carving out numerous chances for themselves and their pressure paid off in the 74th minute, with substitute Fazli making an immediate impact as his free-kick found Faritz and the full-back nodded in to reduce the deficit.

It wasn’t until injury time that Home would soon draw level. Shahril Ishak’s quick feet drew a foul from Shaqi Sulaiman earning a penalty, which was dispatched by Isaka Cernak, sending the game into a penalty shootout which Balestier came out on tops.
