Amartey and Leicester claw back some respect after upheaval

Daniel Amartey was thrown into the deep end by caretaker coach Craig Shakespeare as Leicester City defended against Liverpool on Monday night.

The Ghanaian entered the fray with scores at 3-1 as the Foxes fought to preserve their lead immediately after Phillippe Coutinho had scored the visitors’ only goal.

Jamie Vardy put the hosts in the lead 28 minutes into the first half with a searing run that evoked his form of last season, in their first game after the sacking of manager Claudio Ranieri over the team’s poor performances that left them in relegation zone, a season after an unprecedented championship win.

As if responding to the new sense of optimism in the club, Daniel Drinkwater shot a spectacular one into the net for his first goal of the season before the half time break.

Vardy rounded out his team’s scoring with his seventh goal of the season via a header on 60 minutes as Jurgen Klopp’s side were stunned at the King Power Stadium.

Coutinho restored some pride before Amartey was sent in to shore up the midfield against the marauding Liverpool attack for his 19th appearance in the Premier League this term.

Leicester held on for the three points and moved up to 15th spot as fans remembered their former manager with placards and song.

Amartey tweeted words of gratefulness after Ranieri’s departure last week. The Italian brought him from FC Copenhagen in January 2016 just before the Foxes won he Premier League title.
