Ex-Referee Byron Moreno Pleads Guilty To Heroin Smuggling

Controversial referee to be sentenced soon.
Ex-World Cup referee Byron Moreno has pleaded guilty in New York to trafficking drugs, according to El Diario Nueva York.

In September Moreno was arrested in JFK airport with heroin in his possession.

Family members present at the courthouse wept as Moreno declared his guilty plea. Moreno could receive a maximum six-year sentence.

The Ecuadorian referee became infamous for a match he officiated in the 2002 World Cup between Italy and the hosts, South Korea. The Italians were eliminated in extra-time and a number of the calls by Moreno were questionable and controversial.

The 41 year old is due to be sentenced soon. He was a referee for sixteen years, seven of them as a FIFA referee.
