Former Sweden international Fredrik Ljungberg has signed a season-and-a-half contract with J-League side Shimizu S-Pulse.

On the official FIFA website, the former Arsenal and Celtic midfielder, who also had a stint in MLS with Seattle Sounders FC and the Chicago Fire, was quoted speaking highly of Japan.

"I was inspired by the way the Japanese people dealt with the tragedy of the 11 March earthquake and I really want to show support for them by playing football," the 34-year-old said.

Ljungberg, who hopes to play his first competitive game in a couple of weeks, will join veterans Shinji Ono and Naohiro Takahara at S-Pulse. Both had spells in Europe in the past decade.
