OFFICIAL: Sidney Govou Signs With Panathinaikos

The Frenchman has joined compatriot Djibril Cisse in Athens.
Greek champions Panathinaikos have made a splash in the transfer market with the acquisition of Sidney Govou on a free transfer from Olympique Lyon.

The France international has signed a two-year deal with the Athenian giants worth a reported €1.2 million per season, and is expected to play an integral role in Panathinaikos' title defense this season.

Fresh off a disappointing run with France at this summer’s World Cup, Govou is looking to move on from Les Bleus’ dismal campaign by immediately focusing on his club career. Govou had previously spent his entire career at the Stade Gerland, a tenure that last nearly two decades with the Ligue 1 powerhouse.

The Trifylli are hoping Govou’s close chemistry with international team-mate Djibril Cisse will pay off as Nikos Nioplias’ side have clinched a berth in the Champions League group stage.

Govou’s arrival in Athens could pave the way for Sebastian Leto’s exit from the Greek capital after just one season as Portuguese side Benfica have reportedly submitted an offer for the Argentine winger.
