Jermaine Jones has withdrawn from the U.S. national team roster for a pair of World Cup qualifiers and returned to the Colorado Rapids to continue rehabbing a nagging knee injury.
U.S. Soccer announced Jones' departure Wednesday, one day after U.S. coach Jurgen Klinsmann told reporters in Jacksonville, Florida, that the 34-year-old midfielder's status was up in the air. Jones has not played for the Rapids since suffering a knee sprain July 4.
The injury leaves the U.S. shorthanded in central midfield for Friday's match at St. Vincent and the Grenadines, with captain Michael Bradley serving a suspension for yellow card accumulation. The Americans also are without defender John Brooks (back issues) and forwards Clint Dempsey (irregular heartbeat) and Gyasi Zardes (broken foot).
Here is the updated U.S. roster for Friday's trip to St. Vincent and Tuesday's game against Trinidad and Tobago in Jacksonville.
