U.S. misses chance to qualify for 2016 Olympics

Andi Herzog's side produced a poor performance in the all-important semifinal against Honduras after winning its three group-stage matches.

The United States U-23 side lost 2-0 to Honduras Saturday in Sandy, Utah – missing out on a chance to clinch a berth at the 2016 Olympics in Rio de Janeiro.

Andi Herzog's men were outplayed for most of the CONCACAF semifinal match at Rio Tinto Stadium, and will now have to qualify the hard way if they want to avoid missing two straight Olympic tournaments.

Alberth Elis scored on either side of the half for Honduras, which qualified for its third consecutive Olympic games.

With the defeat, the U.S. must now win two consecutive matches to qualify for Rio. First, it will face Canada, the loser of the other semifinal, on Tuesday in the third place match. If the U.S. wins that game, it will travel to Rio to face Colombia in March for a spot at the Olympics.

The U.S. is looking to qualify for the Olympics for the first time since the 2008 Beijing tournament, after failing to qualify for London 2012.
