Altidore nets hat trick against Utrecht

The U.S. international forward added to his career-best goal total with a trio of tallies in AZ Alkmaar's league rout.
Jozy Altidore's two-match scoring "slump" is over. And how.

Altidore struck for a hat trick for the third time this season, netting a trio of goals in a nine-minute span in AZ Alkmaar's 6-0 rout of FC Utrecht Sunday.

Altidore took advantage of two Utrecht red cards to strike from the penalty spot in the 28th and 34th minutes before latching onto a cross and connecting for a leaping header from about eight yards out in the 37th minute to cap his prolific stretch.

Altidore had previously tallied hat tricks against Roda JC on Sept. 16 and against Vitesse on Jan. 19. He now has 28 goals across all competitions this season (21 in league play), continuing to add to his single-season record mark for Americans based abroad.

AZ had no problem killing off the match against nine-man Utrecht, and the result lifted the club six points clear of a place in a relegation playoff and extended its league unbeaten streak to three matches. Aron Johannsson, an Alabama-born Icelandic international, tallied the final goal of the match in his second appearance with AZ after making a winter transfer from AGF Aarhus.
