United States, Mexico headline Hexagonal field

Once on the verge of falling short of the Hexagonal, the Americans took care of business against Guatemala at home to move on, while four others booked their spot Tuesday.
The United States won Group A in CONCACAF's World Cup qualifying semifinals after cruising to a 3-1 victory over Guatemala Tuesday night in Kansas City, Kan.

The Americans, who appeared to be wobbling after a shocking loss to Jamaica last month, finished the round with 13 points after winning four games, drawing once and losing once.

The U.S. win over Guatemala, along with Jamaica's 4-1 victory over Antigua & Barbuda, eliminated Guatemala from World Cup contention. The Reggae Boyz join the Americans in the Hexagonal stage.

Meanwhile, Mexico defeated El Salvador 2-0 to finish Group B with six wins from six matches, while Costa Rica grabbed the final spot from the group with a 7-0 pasting of Guyana.

In Group C, Canada slumped to a devastating 8-1 loss at Honduras, and Panama drew Cuba 1-1 to send the two Central American countries on to the Hex.

After today's results, the Hexagonal is set: Mexico, Costa Rica, Honduras and Panama join the U.S. and Jamaica in the final round of qualifying, which begins next year.
