AZ Alkmaar drew its first league match of the season 2-2 against the reigning Eredivisie champ, Ajax, thanks to two goals from Jozy Altidore.
The goals came two minutes apart early in the second half, canceling out an early Gregory van der Wiel opener. Kolbeinn Sigthorsson finished the scoring less than 10 minutes from the final whistle.
For the first of Altidore's goals, he ran inside-out to the left flank to latch onto a sprayed long ball from Nick Viergever. The American international skinned one defender and shoulder-barged another to charge into the box. Then he sat the 'keeper and flicked his shot into the top corner.
The second was arguably as good. Altidore played a one-time backheel to instigate a one-two with Maarten Martens. Free on goal at a narrow angle, Altidore blasted a shot with his laces into the top near corner.
The 22-year-old made way in the 84th minute.
