BOYDS, Md. - Abby Wambach once again proved to be the Washington Freedom’s MVP on Saturday night. Wambach tallied two goals, while Lisa De Vanna scored one to lead Washington to a 3-1 win over Sky Blue FC and third place in the WPS standings.

Washington (8-7-5, 29 points) will host the first WPS playoff game on July 15th at 4:00 p.m. ET vs. the No. 4 seed. Sky Blue FC (7-8-5, 26 points) currently sits in fourth place. But it all depends on the Boston Breakers’ result on Sunday. Boston (7-8-4, 25 points) faces the Los Angeles Sol in their season finale at 6:00 p.m. ET on Sunday. If Boston loses or ends in a draw on Sunday then Sky Blue FC will advance. But if the Breakers win, Sky Blue will end the season in fifth place.

In the 19th minute, Rebecca Moros crossed the ball into the box, where Wambach easily finished it for a 1-0 lead.

Sky Blue FC had a flurry of chances a few minutes a part. In the 33rd minute, Yael Averbuch played a ball back to Natasha Kai, who sent the ball over Freedom goalkeeper Erin McLeod, but wide of the goal. Rosana headed a Heather O’Reilly ball wide in the 34th minute. Two minutes later Kacey White sent the ball over the crossbar. Just before the half, Rosana blasted a shot toward goal, forcing McLeod to make the save.

Before Sky Blue could find the net, Wambach gave the Freedom a 2-0 lead in the 49th minute. De Vanna made a run early in the second half, and then crossed the ball to Wambach. The Freedom striker made it look easy once again, burying her second goal of the night and eighth of the season.

But four minutes later, Sky Blue got a much-needed goal. Rosana beat a Freedom defender before bending a long shot into the upper right corner, cutting the Freedom’s lead in half.

However in the 57th minute, the De Vanna, Wambach connection struck again. This time it was Wambach who crossed a low ball to De Vanna. De Vanna sent it into the net for a 3-1 lead.

Kai looked for a goal in the 64th minute, but Freedom defender Becky Sauerbrunn denied her opportunity, heading the ball out of harms way. Rosana bent a freekick into the box in the 85th minute, only to have the ball bounce off the bar.

The Freedom held on for the 3-1 win.
