Goal.com WPS Player Of The Week: Caroline Seger, Philadelphia Independence

Philadelphia has now had two of its midfielders notch three assists in a game. Caroline Seger did it Saturday and is this week's Goal.com POW.
Week 15 was definitely the week of the goal in Women's Professional Soccer. In three weekend games, fourteen goals were scored. But this week's Goal.com WPS Player of the Week went to a player that was setting up the scorers.

On any normal week, scoring two goals in a match would put one on the fast track for the POW. Four players achieved that feat -- Marta and Tiffeny Milbrett for FC Gold Pride, Amy Rodriguez for Philadelphia Independence and Kelly Smith for the Boston Breakers -- rendering that gateway to POW moot.

In Smith's performance, she added an assist in her club's 3-1 win at Chicago. That still wasn't enough.

What did it take to get this week's POW? A WPS record-tying three assist performance by the Independence's Caroline Seger.

Seger's feat tied her teammate Lori Lindsey, who tallied three helpers on a 3-1 win over the Washington Freedom on April 25.

When Goal.com notified Independence coach Paul Riley of the selection, he responded with, "Great call."

But what made the Swedish international suddenly shoot her game to the next level was a little push by her club -- that and her natural ability.

"We have certainly challenged Caroline over the past week to really hit top form," said Riley. "She has everything a world class midfielder needs: Vision, technique, range of passing, physical qualities.

"But what sets her apart from the rest is her ability to drive the engine room of the team," Riley continued. "She is a great personality on the field and in the locker room and she is a massive player for our franchise both on and off the field."

In the Independence's 4-1 win over Sky Blue FC at home last week, she proved to be all of that, and maybe more.

"Seger's recent play has shown that Lori Lindsey is not the only force in Philadelphia's midfield," commented Goal.com's Philadelphia Independence correspondent Ramin Majd, who was fortunate to see Seger in person at John A. Farrell Stadium in West Chester, Penn.

So it's now without doubt why Seger is this week's Goal.com POW.

Also receiving consideration (outside of all the two-goal scorers - with Smith leading that group) was Christine Sinclair, who followed up her two-goal game last week with a goal and two assists in two games this week. Marta scored three goals in her two games.
