Americans On The Continent: Captain America

Now fully recovered from his shoulder injury, Steve Cherundolo played the full 90 for Hannover, wearing the captain’s armband in place of Arnold Bruggink, who started on the bench.

Despite being pinned back in their area for much of the game, and having Jiri Stajner sent off with two yellow cards, Hannover fought tooth and nail to keep a rather listless and wasteful Hamburg off the scoresheet.

Hamburg’s frustrations after the match were clearly evident as star striker Jose Paulo Guerrero will likely face severe repercussions after throwing a water bottle in the face of a heckling Hamburg fan on his way off the pitch.

Vs. Olympique Lyonnais, 1-2, 90 minutes

Carlos Bocanegra and Rennes surrendered a halftime lead to fall 2-1 at home to French giants Lyon thanks to second-half strikes from Michel Bastos and Lisandro Lopez.  Despite having rested French national Jeremy Toulalan, attackers Bafetimbi Gomis and Cesar Delgado and wing-back Anthony Reveillere, the title challengers were able to muscle their way to victory after Asamoah Gyan’s 15th-minute strike.  With the win, Lyon sits on top of the French Ligue 1, although holders and Champions League opponents Bordeaux have two games in hand.
