Americans On The Continent: Greek Tragedy

Despite Aris Thessaloniki’s American pair linking up for a goal from the bench, the Thessalonian club limped to a 2-1 defeat against ten-man Xanthi.

Freddy Adu and Eddie Johnson came on as 65th and 71st minute substitutes, respectively, combining for Aris’ only goal in the 90th minute.  After Aris found themselves down 2-0, Hector Cuper brought on Adu for Toni Calvo at left midfield and Johnson replaced the injured Sergio Koke.  On 90 minutes, Adu found the streaking Johnson on a through ball from the left and the former FC Dallas striker was able to bundle it into the back of the net and give the visiting supporters a glimmer of hope.  Despite the Americans’ effort however, Aris could not complete the comeback and the final scoreline remained 2-1.
