Americans On The Continent: Five for Fighting

By Aaron West

Playing at home on Saturday, Cherundolo and his teammates got off to a dream start as they surged into a two-goal lead after just 10 minutes of play.  Arnold Bruggink first set up midfielder Sofian Chahed in the seventh minute and then netted himself from just outside the area on 10 minutes.

Freiburg pulled back into contention after 35 minutes with Ivica Banovic’s headed goal, but Hannover danced out of reach yet again just before the break through Karim Haggui’s answering header on the stroke of halftime.

The final eight minutes were anything but boring as Julian Schuster struck for Freiburg in the 82nd minute from yet another headed effort.  Just three minutes later, Didier Ya Konan prodded home Jan Rosenthal’s knockdown to make it 4-2.  Not content with his effort, Ya Konan then set up 70th minute substitute Sergio Pinto in the 90th minute to wrap up the match.

Steve Cherundolo again went the full 90 for Hannover, putting in a solid shift in his customary right back slot.

Michael Bradley, Borussia Monchengladbach (Germany)
Vs. Borussia Dortmund, 0-1, 90 minutes

Michael Bradley played the full 90 for Borussia Monchengladbach for the first time since August, but was unable to help his side take any points from their rivals from Dortmund.  In what was an exceedingly hard-fought battle, it took just one first-half strike from Argentine striker Lucas Barrios to settle the difference.
Next up: Away to VfL Wolfsburg, Sunday, October 18

Carlos Bocanegra, Rennes (France)
Vs. Auxerre, 0-1, 16 minutes, Red Card

Carlos Bocanegra had a forgettable outing for Rennes as he saw red for pulling down Kenyan striker Dennis Oliech as he was through on goal.  From the ensuing free kick, Auxerre netted through French international Benoit Pedretti.  Down a man and a goal, Rennes was unable to mount a comeback, and the scoreline remained at 1-0 to the visitors.
Next up: Away to Lille, Saturday, October 17

Charlie Davies, Sochaux (France)
Vs. Le Mans, 1-0, 90 minutes

Charlie Davies and Sochaux put in a workmanlike and fruitful effort against Le Mans, coming away with a 1-0 victory at home.  Davies played well in his 90 minutes, and Sochaux snatched the winning goal just 12 minutes from time through French U-21 international Marvin Martin’s strike.
Next up: Away to Olympique Lyonnais, Saturday, October 17

Oguchi Onyewu made his debut for Milan, playing 30 minutes as a substitute for Italian legend Alessandro Nesta against FC Zurich in the Champions League.  Unfortunately, his floundering Milan side was unable to overturn Hannu Tihinen’s 10th minute goal, and they fell 1-0.

Freddy Adu made his league debut for Belenenses, playing well for 25 minutes after coming on for Jean Paul Yontcha.

Schalke’s Jermaine Jones is approaching match fitness for Schalke, but did not dress as they beat Eintracht Frankfurt 2-0 over the weekend.

Kenny Cooper played 90 minutes for 1860 Munich, but was again unable to net as his side fell 3-1 to FC St. Pauli.

Marcus Tracy has not been included in Aalborg’s squad for their match tonight against Odense.

Danny Califf was not in the matchday squad as FC Midtjylland beat Koge 2-1 at home.
