Giovani dos Santos and his brother Jonathan are among the names set to return to the Mexico national team for October friendlies.
Manager Juan Carlos Osorio announced his squad Thursday for games against New Zealand and Panama, with a number of players returning to the national team fold after missing recent matches.
Gio is on a tear for the LA Galaxy, while Jonathan is seeing regular action in both La Liga and the Europa League for Villarreal. Chivas forward Alan Pulido also returns to the fold after making Mexico’s 2014 World Cup team but seeing his career derailed by club difficulties.
The matches occupy an interesting space for Mexico. The games come in a difficult window to find top opposition, with most confederations around the world participating in World Cup qualifiers in October. Still, El Tri need to find some rhythm after an uninspiring win over El Salvador and draw with Honduras closed out the fourth round of qualification with a final-round opener against the United States in November looming.
Some European stars who will almost certainly be part of the team to face the U.S. in Columbus have been left off the list, with Javier "Chicharito" Hernandez, Jesus "Tecatito" Corona, Miguel Layun and Guillermo Ochoa among those not involved in the friendly matches. But others, like Jonathan dos Santos and Frankfurt attacker Marco Fabian, are part of the list
Osorio also is plying Liga MX for depth, once again involving Queretaro forward Angel Sepulveda in the team, and calling Pulido's club teammates Oswaldo Alanis and Hedgardo Marin to play in the center. Chivas goalkeeper Rodolfo Cota will seek his first senior cap.
Mexico plays New Zealand on Oct. 8 in Nashville before taking on Panama on Oct. 11 outside Chicago.
