Cruz Azul announces Santa Cruz capture

La Maquina hopes the South American striker will help it cruise into the postseason.

Paraguayan striker Roque Santa Cruz’s prolonged transfer from Malaga to Liga MX side Cruz Azul was confirmed Monday.

The 33-year-old former Bayern Munich forward has signed a two-year deal with the Mexican side, announced Cruz Azul on its website.

After finalizing his deal, Santa Cruz went on to Paraguay to sort out some personal matters and will return to Mexico “in the first days of January,” according to the statement.

Santa Cruz has featured for Paraguay at three World Cups and joins a Cruz Azul team that has struggled in recent months, first in the Apertura 2014 and then at the Club World Cup.

The striker started his career with Olimpia in his native country before moving on to Bayern Munich, Blackburn Rovers, Manchester City, Real Betis and then Malaga.

Cruz Azul is searching for its first Liga MX title since 1997 and begins its Clausura 2015 campaign away against Pachuca on Jan. 10.
