Paul Aguilar was not ruled out of Club America’s 3-0 win over Monterrey on Thursday due to an injury, as the club had indicated. Instead, he had been separated from the squad for indiscipline.
Club America coach Antonio Mohamed confirmed the punishment in an interview with Record on Friday, but wouldn’t state what Aguilar had done, with reports in Mexico suggesting the Mexico international right back had argued with coaching staff.
Las Aguilas go into Sunday’s Liga MX semifinal second leg 3-0 up on aggregate against Los Rayados, but Mohamed has admitted his future as coach is uncertain regardless of the outcome of the playoffs.
Monterrey coach Carlos Barra could also be on shaky ground in terms of his future employment and is adamant his team can pull off an unlikely comeback on Sunday.
“We will use our means, our anger, to reverse this in the return leg, however difficult that may be,” said Barra after Thursday’s game.
The match in the Estadio Azteca could well be Chilean forward Humberto Suazo’s last in a Monterrey shirt, with the 33-year-old leaving the field in tears on Thursday and reports linking him with a move back to Chile with Colo Colo.
