Cruz Azul are going through some tough times; they are currently last in Group 2 with only 11 points. La Maquina has only been able to manage two wins this entire season.
But for Cruz Azul players, these results are all just a string of bad luck.
Azul Vice President Victor Garces said they are lacking the attitude
needed to win and pointed to a personnel problem. However, Gerardo
Torrado feels differently.
“I think the attitude of the team is
there. We are a major part to what is happening right now. We are the
ones with the ideas inside the field, we're the ones who play, and the
ones that score goals. In a certain form we have not been able to get
the results needed in the championship,” clarified Torrado. “We all
talk amongst ourselves and we are all committed to take Cruz Azul
forward. We know that everyone including the coaching staff will turn
things around. We work hard and we fight but sometimes the outcome just
doesn’t go your way.”
Although not playing well in Mexico, Cruz
Azul has managed to reach the semifinals in the CONCACAF Champions
League. La Maquina will have to measure up against Puerto Rico
Islanders. They will go into the game with a two goal disadvantage.
They will play at home but even then the stadium is not expected to
fill due to recent results.
“When we do not get the right result
is when we should be stronger mentally, we need to keep the faith with
oneself and with the team in order to go forward. If we put all those
elements together we will be able to turn things around,” Torrado said.
“We will need to play every game like if it was a final and against the
islanders we need to come out victorious. We need to play intensely and
never put our arms down in any of the tournaments."
If Cruz Azul
continues like this it won’t be long till their fans break out the
paper bags and put them over their heads just to be able to attend a
