The LA Galaxy announced the signing of two veterans Friday, hours before the 2015 MLS season is set to begin.
Finnish international midfielder Mika Vayrynen joins from HJK in Finland and Edson Buddle returns to the club after playing with Colorado the previous two seasons. Both players had been training with the Galaxy before signing.
The 33-year-old Vayrynen's career included stops in the Eredivisie and with Leeds United before he returned to his native Finland, where he still represents the national team - playing in January matches against Yemen and Sweden.
“Mika is a player that brings additional experience to our midfield,” said Bruce Arena, the Galaxy's head coach and general manager, in a news release. “We saw his abilities during preseason and are confident he can contribute to our team this season. We are happy he will be a part of our group going forward.”
Buddle has spent 13 years in MLS and has 100 league goals. He also helped the Galaxy to the 2012 MLS Cup and 2010 Supporters' Shield. The 33-year-old represented the United States at the 2010 World Cup.
“We’re very excited to have Edson return to the Galaxy this season,” Arena said in a news release. “He is an experienced goal scorer in our league who is familiar with the Galaxy. We think he can be a valuable member of our team this season.”
The Galaxy did not disclose terms of either deal, citing team and league policy. They will open the season with a match against the Chicago Fire at 10 p.m. ET Friday.
