MLS: Buddle Stars in LA Galaxy’s Romp over Dallas

A hat-trick for Edson Buddle was more than enough for Los Angeles to earn a 5-1 win over FC Dallas in Texas.
Edson Buddle knew he had to do something to show he belongs on the field even after Los Angeles Galaxy star striker Carlos Ruiz returns from injury. Scoring three goals was a good way to prove his point as the Galaxy crushed a reeling FC Dallas side, 5-1, at Pizza Hut Park on Sunday afternoon.

L.A. climbed into second place in the West with the three points, while the Hoops fell to fourth place, extending to four games their winless streak.

Before more than 22,000 fans at PHP, Los Angeles took the initiative from the opening minutes. A 14-minute stretch in the middle of the first half saw the Galaxy build an insurmountable lead.

Before Buddle took centerstage, Galaxy defender Chris Klein opened the show. A long, pinpoint-accurate through-ball from rookie Brandon MacDonald loosed Klein behind the defense, and the rightback fired the ball through Dallas goalkeeper Dario Sala’s legs to give the home team a 1-0 lead on 25 minutes.

Six minutes later, Buddle doubled the lead, powering past four defenders and slamming a 15-yard shot that left Sala helpless. It was Buddle’s first goal of the season. Three minutes after that, Landon Donovan broke into the Dallas area on the left side. His cross ricocheted off Hoops defender Duilio Davino and into the back of the net.

Buddle grabbed his second goal in the 39th minute. After a jumble in Dallas’s goal area was not handled by the defense, the ball popped out to Buddle, who calmly tapped it in for his second goal on the day.

Dallas pulled one back in the 54th minute through Dominic Oduro, who headed in a Kenny Cooper cross from the left side. But the goal did little to change the tenor of the match, as Dallas were already thoroughly beaten. In the 75th minute, FCD’s frustrations spilled over when centerback Adrien Serioux received a straight red card after a vicious tackle from behind on David Beckham.

Beckham exacted his revenge five minutes from time, assisting on Buddle’s third goal. On a break into offensive third, Beckham chipped softly to the far post, where Buddle easily headed home to complete the hat-trick.
