Wolverhampton Wanderers v Southampton Live Commentary, 9/3/22

1 - 0
Daniel Podence (45+1)
Molineux Stadium

That's all from us today folks, we hope you enjoyed the game!
This win moves Wolves up to 14th in the table and they’ll travel to Anfield to face Liverpool next weekend. Meanwhile Southampton have dropped to 12th and they’ll welcome Brentford to St Mary’s next time out.
Wolves pick up their first win of the season, with a 1-0 victory over Southampton thanks to a Podence strike just before half-time. Adams thought he had equalised for the visitors just after the hour mark, but it was ruled out after he bundled the ball into the back of the net with his arm from close range. Then just two minutes later, the striker struck the crossbar with a header and that’s as close as Southampton came to getting an equaliser, with Wolves hanging on to pick up all three points.
A. Bella-Kotchap
Yellow Card
90' + 5' Bella-Kotchap is booked for sliding in late on Guedes as he tried to block a clearance.
Gonçalo Guedes
Yellow Card
Wolverhampton Wanderers
90' + 4' Guedes is booked for bringing down Walker-Peters in midfield.
90' + 2' Time is running out for Southampton and Wolves are frustrating them by keeping the ball in the visitors half. If Wolves can hang on, it'll be their first win of the season.
90' There will be a minimum of four minutes of added time played at the end of the second half.
89' There's just a lack of quality in the final third for Southampton now and the Wolves defence look pretty comfortable at the moment, with Sa untested.
87' Wolves are taking their time with set-pieces and throw-ins now, just trying to run down the clock in an attempt to prevent Southampton from getting an equaliser.
85' There's not long left to play now, just five minutes, plus any additional time added on. Can Southampton score a late equaliser to nick a point?
S. Mara
A. Armstrong
83' Adam Armstrong makes way for Mara.
Hwang Hee-Chan
Daniel Podence
Wolverhampton Wanderers
82' The goalscorer Podence also comes off and Hwang heads on.
Adama Traoré
Pedro Neto
Wolverhampton Wanderers
82' Double Wolves change now, with Neto coming off the pitch and he has been replaced by Traore.
Rúben Neves
Yellow Card
Wolverhampton Wanderers
81' Neves is booked for a challenge that comes out of frustration on Edozie.
80' Guedes goes down under pressure from Bella-Kotchap after the winger races past the defender and into the penalty area. However, the referee isn't interested and nothing is given.
78' Despite seeing much more of the ball in the Wolves half, Southampton haven't really tested Sa enough in the last 10 minutes or so, with the two chances for Adams being the best so far.
João Moutinho
Yellow Card
Wolverhampton Wanderers
76' Moutinho is booked for deliberately trying to trip Walker-Peters as he sprinted past him down the wing.
A. Maitland-Niles
R. Perraud
73' Perraud is the other to come off and Maitland-Niles is on for his Saints debut.
S. Edozie
J. Aribo
73' Double Southampton change now, with Aribo the first to make way and on comes Edozie.
71' Great challenge! Neto appears to be released in behind, but Bazunu races out of his goal and just gets to the ball in the nick of time and sends it out of play. Good positioning by the keeper.
69' Not too far away! Jonny tries his luck from the edge of the box with a curling effort towards the top left corner, but it flies narrowly wide of the post.
67' Southampton have dropped more points from winning positions than any other Premier League side since Ralph Hasenhuttl took charge in December 2018 (89). However, no side has claimed more points from behind this season than Saints (7), with both of their wins and their one draw coming having conceded the first goal.
65' Southampton look dangerous in front of goal at the moment, they are piling on the pressure and are finding openings in the Wolves defence. Adams should have scored to make it 1-1.
63' OFF THE BAR! Adams has another go with a header after a Stuart Armstrong cross, but the striker can't keep the ball down and it strikes the crossbar! So close to an equaliser.
61' GOAL RULED OUT! Southampton thought they had equalised! Aribo gets into the box down the right and chips a cross into the middle, which takes a deflection that fools Sa, and Adams makes a mess of his header from close range, but still turns it into the back of the net. However, the ball strikes his head and his arm, so the referee has ruled it out for handball.
60' Good chance! Ward-Prowse tries his luck from a free-kick and he gets it up and over the wall, but it's not close enough to the corner and Sa gets across and makes a comfortable save.
58' Free-kick to Southampton in a very good shooting position affter Neves brings down Stuart Armstrong right on the edge of the box and this is a great chance for Ward-Prowse to test Sa.
M. Djenepo
I. Diallo
56' The other change sees Diallo head off the pitch and he has been replaced by Djenepo.
S. Armstrong
M. Elyounoussi
56' Double Saints substitution coming up now, the first sees Elyounoussi replaced by Stuart Armstrong.
55' Wild effort! The ball falls nicely to Elyounoussi in the box and he powers a shot towards goal from a tight angle, but it flies high over the crossbar.
54' It will be interesting to see how long Southampton leave it before making any changes as Wolves have grown into the second half now and are starting to open them up at the back.
52' Southampton are looking to win back-to-back away games in the Premier League for the first time since June 2020 after their 2-1 win at Leicester in their last such outing.
50' Good defending! Ward-Prowse whips an excellent cross into the penalty area looking for Adams, but Jonny reads it well and makes a good clearance to prevent an opportunity on goal.
48' Southampton have the early possession following the restart, forcing Wolves to sit deep and soak up the pressure in their own half. A Saints equaliser straight away would be a huge blow for the home side.
46' The second half is under way!
Gonçalo Guedes
S. Kalajdzic
Wolverhampton Wanderers
46' Wolves have made a change ahead of the second half, with Kalajdzic coming off and he has been replaced by Guedes.
It's been end-to-end at times, with both teams looking to break forward on the counter-attack, but there has only been the one goal. Southampton won their last away game after coming from behind from a losing position, so Wolves need to be wary of that.
Wolves lead 1-0 at the break after Podence fired them ahead in stoppage time following a lovely quick counter. The home side could have scored a few more, with Ait-Nouri and Neto both testing Bazunu, who had to make a couple of good saves to deny them the opener. Meanwhile Aribo went close at the other end for Saints, but his shot from close range was well blocked by a combination of Neves and Sa.
Matheus Nunes
Wolverhampton Wanderers
45' + 1' The ball into the box by Nunes was perfect for Podence, straight to his feet and he managed to find the back of the net, with a bit of luck.
Daniel Podence
Wolverhampton Wanderers
45' + 1' GOAL! Wolves take the lead! The counter quickly down the right wing, with Jonny sliding the ball through to Nunes on the overlap and he plays a lovely cross into the box for the unmarked Podence at the far post. Podence only has Bazunu to beat and he catches the keeper out, as he mis-hits his shot, so it bobbles up and goes into the back of the net. They lead 1-0!
I. Diallo
Yellow Card
45' Diallo is booked after a few fouls and the referee has finally had enough.
45' There will be a minimum of two minutes added time played at the end of the first half.
44' Southampton win a corner late on in the first half, but the ball in from Ward-Prowse is poor and Wolves clear the danger. It looks like it'll be goalless at the break.
42' There isn’t long left to play before the end of the first half. Can either side break the deadlock before the half-time whistle?
40' Stoppage in play here as Kalajdzic is down after falling awkwardly as he tried to win the ball back and he appears to be in a bit of pain. The medical staff are giving him some treatment.
38' PENALTY SHOUT! Kalajdzic tries to control the ball in the box after a Southampton deflection sent it into his path, but he goes down under pressure and appeals for a spot-kick. However, it would have been a very soft one and nothing is given.
37' It looks like Diallo is on his last warning now after another foul and he gets a talking-to from the referee, much to the disappointment of the Wolves players who want a yellow card to be shown.
36' The pace has dropped slightly in the last few minutes, with the home side enjoying much of the possession, but Southampton are pressing them high and not allowing them to get into their half.
34' The Wolves full-backs are starting to cause a few more problems for the visitors, with Ait-Nouri getting forward down the left wing and he produces a good low cross, but Bella-Kotchap clears it behind for a corner. The resulting set piece comes to nothing.
31' We’re past the half an hour mark now and it remains goalless between Wolves and Southampton, with the home side going the closest to scoring so far.
29' It's getting a bit scrappy out there now, with both teams struggling to keep the ball in midfield and a few free-kicks have been given away.
Jonny Castro
Yellow Card
Wolverhampton Wanderers
27' The first yellow card of the game is shown to Jonny as he dives into a challenge with Aribo and catches him late.
26' Southampton are winless in their last six away league games against Wolves (D3 L3), since a 6-0 victory in March 2007 in the Championship.
24' Decent chance! Kalajdzic rises above his marker in the box as a corner is whipped in and he tries to direct his header towards goal, but it flies wide of the post.
23' Good pressure by the Wolves attackers. They force Bazunu to make a mistake at the back and send his clearance out of play, handing possession back to the home side in a decent position.
21' PENALTY SHOUT! Walker-Peters whips a cross into the box from the right, which is blocked by Collins and the Saints players appeals for a penalty. The ball seemed to strike the defenders leg and then it bounced up and accidentally hit his arm. Nothing given by the referee.
20' Both teams look dangerous on the counter-attack, with plenty of space opening up, allowing the attackers to exploit this with runs in behind.
18' CHANCE! Adams gets in behind the Wolves defence and pulls a cross back from the byline, which is met by Aribo; however, Sa and a defender get their bodies in the way and make the block in the six-yard box.
17' Wolves have struggled to score so far this season, registering just two goals in five games, but they've gone close on a couple of occasions already today.
15' Decent effort! Armstrong tries to curl the ball into the top right corner, but he gets too much on his strike and it flies over the crossbar.
14' CHANCE! Wolves counter quickly and catch Southampton out at the back, with Nunes laying it off to Neto to his right on the overlap and the winger tries to beat Bazunu at his near post. However, the strike flies just wide of the bottom right post.
12' Kalajdzic is having to go off the pitch for Wolves after he's involved in a aerial collision and has a bit of blood coming from his face. However, it doesn't look serious and he should be fine to come back on shortly.
10' Wolves have won four of their last five Premier League games against Southampton (D1), including each of the last three in a row. They’d only won four of their previous 19 against Saints in the top-flight before this (D5 L10).
8' CHANCE! Ait-Nouri sneaks in at the far post and tries to beat Bazunu at his near post with a low drive from a tight angle, but the keeper is alert to the danger and makes a good stop.
7' Both teams are trying to get on the ball now and get into the swing of things, but it's a bit end-to end so far and there are no chances to speak of.
5' Good defending! Podence is released down the left wing and he races into the final third and whips a cross into the box looking for Kalajdzic. However, Salisu does well to get across and send it behind for a corner.
3' Southampton with the early possession here, keeping it nicely in midfield, but Wolves are pressing them high so they are struggling to get into the final third.
1' We're under way!
The teams are out on the pitch and kick-off is just a few minutes away, stay tuned for all the match action!
