However, Villarreal were then awarded a penalty one minute later when David Alaba slipped and handled in the area. Gerard Moreno scored the spot-kick, which was enough to secure the three points for Quique Setien's men to lift them into fifth place in the table.

Carlo Ancelotti will be concerned by his side's performance as they still don't look themselves out there, which has been a theme of their matches since the restart after the World Cup. He will be hopeful that his team finds their rhythm for the second half.
It's goalless at the break in the LaLiga clash between Villarreal and Real Madrid at El Madrigal. The home side will feel that they should be in front after a strong first-half performance. At the other end, Vinicius Junior was denied by a fine stop from Pepe Reina. The game is in the balance.

1' We're under way in this LaLiga clash.
Villarreal have not won any of their last nine games against Real Madrid in LaLiga (D6 L3) since a 1-0 win at the Santiago Bernabeu in January 2018, with both of their last two such matches finishing goalless. Against no opponent have they recorded three straight goalless draws in the competition.
Madrid have also made nine changes to their side that played in the Copa del Rey against Cacereno. Tchouameni and Militao remain in the line-up, but Ancelotti returns his key men to action. Benzema, Valverde and Vinicius lead the line. Modric and Kroos join Tchouameni in the middle of the park. Rudiger, Mendy and Alaba return to the back four, while Courtois replaces Lunin in goal.
Villarreal have made nine changes to their side from their win over Cartagena during the week. Only Reina and Baena retain their places in the line-up. Moreno, Foyth, Albiol and Torres come into the back four, while Parejo and Coquelin join Baena in midfield. Chukwueze, Moreno and Pino form a three-man attack.

Real Madrid had a tough experience during the week in their Copa del Rey clash, barely squeezing past fifth division Cacereno, despite naming a strong side. Rodrygo scored the only goal of the game, but it was far from straightforward for Los Blancos. They returned to LaLiga action after the World Cup with a win over Real Valladolid courtesy of two late goals from Karim Benzema. That was not a strong performance either so Carlo Ancelotti will want to see an improvement from his side at El Madrigal.
Villarreal returned to LaLiga action with a victory over Valencia last time out. Quique Setien's men did go a goal down to an Edinson Cavani strike, but they were able to rally in the second half through efforts from Samuel Chukwueze and Juan Foyth to secure the three points. Villarreal were outstanding in the Copa del Rey during the week, advancing to the last 16 with a 5-1 win over FC Cartagena. They will need the same level of clinical edge in front of goal today.
