Simba Sports Club could not make home advantage count as they were held to a goalless draw by Tout Puissant Mazembe in the first leg of their Caf Champions League quarter-final encounter played at the National Stadium in Dar Es Salaam on Saturday.
The home side had enjoyed much success on home soil in the group stages and were looking to carry the same approach into the knock[-out stages.
Simba were contained by the visitors in the opening stages of the game as John Bocco and Meddie Kagere looked to linked up and to caused a few concerns for the Mazembe defence.
The hosts, who dominated possession, continued to grow in confidence as the match progressed with Bocco impressively spearheading their attack.
They thought their persistence would pay off after they were initially awarded spot-kick late in the second half.
However, Bocco fluffed his effort, much to the disappointment of the home fans who had filled the National Stadium - including one who reportedly walked over 800 km to watch this game - to see the sides remain locked at 0-0
The visitors had a few chances of their own but could not breach Aishi Manula in Wekundu wa Msimbazi's goals.
The Congolese side were able to hold on into the goalless draw ahead of the return leg at the Stade du TP Mazembe - Lubumbashi, in a week's time.
