That’s all for now. Until next time, goodbye!
Overall, the visitors are well worthy of the win and will now hope to avoid Barcelona – should they beat Athletic Bilbao, that is – in the last four. They have a real chance of finally ending a long wait for the Copa del Rey trophy this season, while Madrid’s hopes of a domestic double are over.
What a win for Sociedad, as the 10 men hang on to secure their place in the Copa del Rey semi-finals. Isak’s double wedged in between goals from Odegaard and Merino have proved enough, despite a late Madrid fightback.
90' + 8'
FULL TIME: REAL MADRID 3-4 REAL SOCIEDAD.
90' + 7'
RAMOS! The Madrid skipper connects with Marcelo’s cross and glances a header at goal, but Remiro is well placed to save it. However, it appeared that the flag had gone up for offside.
90' + 6'
A heart-in-mouth moment for Remiro, who has to take in a floated cross right underneath the crossbar. He takes as much time as possible to get up and take the kick, but the referee seems set to add a lot of time on here.
90' + 5'
Sociedad are down to 10 men! Gorosabel has picked up his second yellow in quick succession and has been sent off. Madrid have everything to play for now as the seconds tick down.
90' + 4'
There were some angry exchanges between the players after that goal and Vinicius has received a booking.
90' + 3'
IT’S 4-3! MADRID ARE RIGHT BACK IN THIS! Incredible scenes at the Santiago Bernabeu as Benzema loops in a cross and Nacho – of all people – is on hand to head home.
90' + 3'
He has not had many chances so far but Benzema has just come up with a brilliant piece of quality to set up a dramatic final few minutes, with his cross perfect for Nacho to head in.
90' + 2'
There will be a minimum of six minutes of added time at Santiago Bernabeu. Can Madrid salvage something in the closing moments of what has been a thrilling cup tie?
Le Normand has been treated and assessed for any possible head injury, and the defender has now been allowed back onto the field.
There will be a pause in play here, as Le Normand requires some treatment after blocking a goalbound Modric attempt.
A waste of a chance for Madrid, as Militao makes a mess of an attempted header and the ball spins out for a goal-kick off the defender’s shoulder.
Madrid are right back on the attack, though, with Gorosabel picking up a booking as Sociedad concede a free-kick.
CLOSE! Benzema wins a towering header at the back post and sends it back across towards Ramos. The defender seems to take his eye off the ball, however, perhaps momentarily deciding whether to go for goal or try and tee up the waiting Jovic, and he turns his header over.
It’s all about composure now from Sociedad. They have a two-goal lead but are going to come under swathes of pressure and the home crowd are right behind Madrid once more. The visitors are so close to a famous win and a place in the last four.
VAR allows the goal to stand and play is restarted, with Madrid immediately flooding forward. We should be in for some late drama here!
It was brilliant play from Vinicius, who showed pace and strength to power his way through, before keeping his wits about him to set up Rodrygo.
GOAL! What a crazy match this is. Moments after being denied a goal by the technology, Vinicius scampers into the area down the left and lays it on a plate for Rodrygo, who tucks home into an empty net to give Madrid hope! It’s 4-2 at Santiago Bernabeu, though VAR will check the goal.
NO GOAL! Madrid thought they had got to within two goals through Vinicius – whose stooping header was parried in by Remiro – but VAR disallows the goal for offside after a long check.
Militao has little choice but to foul Barrenetxea in order to prevent a counter-attack and duly receives a yellow card.
Madrid’s final change is Rodrygo coming on for Diaz.
Zidane rolls the dice and makes a double change. The first substitution sees Valverde make way for Jovic, who will partner Benzema up top.
CLOSE! Nacho gets down the right and floats in a dangerous cross towards the back post. Benzema leaps high to meet it but can only send his header wide of the left-hand upright.
Remiro has a save to make but is not really tested by a low effort from Valverde. The Sociedad goalkeeper has had nine saves to make in total so far and has performed well.
It is not often an away side scores four goals at Santiago Bernabeu, but that is exactly what Sociedad have done. They have been superb and are well deserving of this lead, though if Madrid can pull another one back quickly, we could still be in for a grandstand finale.
And providing the assist will be Isak’s final act in this match. He has been replaced by Aihen Munoz.
This has been some performance from Isak. The forward has run Madrid’s defence ragged and now has an assist – as well as two exceptional goals – to his name.
GOOOOAAALLL! SOCIEDAD MAKE IT 4-1! Well, is that finally game over!? Isak turns from scorer to creator with a sublime cutback for Merino who, having made a late, untracked run into the box, sends a first-time finish at Areola, who can only weakly parry it in.
A booking for Zubeldia, though one the midfielder will in no way mind receiving, you would imagine, as he had little choice but to block off Vinicius and prevent Madrid countering after a Sociedad attack broke down.
The break in play allows Sociedad to make a second change. Odegaard – who got things started for the visitors – has made way for Guevara.
CLOSE! Vinicius gets himself into a great position in Sociedad’s area before attempting to curl an effort towards the far post, yet he puts too much power on his strike.
The home faithful are now in great voice, spurring their side on. However, Sociedad still have the lead and have plenty of quality on the break – with Isak unfortunate to be penalised for barging into Militao while attempting to reach a pass from midfield.
Should it finish level after 90 minutes, this match will go to extra-time and, potentially, penalties. Sociedad need to keep their composure at the back now, as Madrid click through the gears and step up the pressure.
Diaz has been on the fringes of things in this match but the ex-Manchester City youngster showed his quality with a clever pass out to Marcelo through a crowd of defenders.
MARCELO PULLS ONE BACK – IT’S 3-1! Well, Sociedad looked entirely comfortable but now Madrid have got themselves on the scoresheet and set up what promises to be an enthralling final 30 minutes. Diaz did well to find space and thread a pass to Marcelo, who duly thumped in a finish at the near post.
Madrid looked shocked but this lead is no less than Sociedad deserve. They have been exceptional and Isak – who had a goal disallowed right at the start of the second half – is now on a hat-trick.
ISAK HAS HIS SECOND AND SOCIEDAD LEAD 3-0! Oh my word, it is all going terribly, terribly wrong for Madrid, but what a famous night this is turning into for the visitors! A cross deflected into Isak’s path and the youngster kept his cool to slam a brilliant finish high into the right-hand corner.
It is substitute Barrenetxea who got the assist, having got the better of Nacho before lofting a perfect cross over Ramos. However, Isak still had plenty to do, but he certainly did it in style.
GOOOOAAAALLL!!! Now Sociedad are 2-0 up and surely there is no doubt about this one! It’s Isak who has got his sixth Copa del Rey goal of the campaign, having sent a supreme, acrobatic volley into the left-hand corner, giving Areola no chance. What a strike from the forward!
Great link up between Benzema and Marcelo, but Merino intervenes with a wonderfully timed challenge on the left-back, who is nevertheless furious he was not awarded a free-kick.
Kroos whips in a cross which Militao gets his head on, but the former Porto defender can only send his effort straight at Remiro.
Madrid must know they have got lucky, there, with Isak just offside. The pass from Odegaard was superb, carving through five Madrid defenders, but as it is, the hosts are still very much in this tie.
NO GOAL! VAR has come to Madrid’s rescue! Odegaard spilt Madrid’s defence with a sensational pass but Isak, who took the ball into his stride and slotted home calmly, had just strayed offside. What a let-off for Los Blancos.
Sociedad, who are wearing a green away strip, get the second half underway.
It’s Madrid who are chasing the game however, and James has made way for Modric.
Two changes at the break – one for each side. For Sociedad, Januzaj has been replaced by Barrenetxea.
The test now for Sociedad is to stay compact and disciplined, with Madrid – who have plenty of quality on the bench – sure to throw everything at them in the early stages of the second half as they attempt to stay in the competition.
A terrific first half for Sociedad, who lead 1-0 thanks to Odegaard’s goal – which came courtesy of an error from Areola. The visitors have had the chances to double their lead, though, while Madrid, bar a few strikes from range, have not overly tested Remiro.
45' + 2'
HALF-TIME: REAL MADRID 0-1 REAL SOCIEDAD.
45' + 1'
CLOSE! Almost a second for Sociedad! Remiro brilliantly gets a counter started by picking out Oyarzabal, whose subsequent pass finds both Militao and Ramos out of position. Isak races through but, under pressure from Ramos, fails to direct his effort on target.
A half-chance at the other end as Isak spins clear of his marker and hooks a strike goalwards. However, he couldn’t keep it down and Areola is able to watch it sail safely over.
We have not seen much of Marcelo as an attacking force so far in this match, though the left-back did just get into Sociedad's box then, only to skew a tame volley straight at Remiro.
After Odegaard’s goal, four out of the 12 conceded by Madrid at Santiago Bernabeu this season in all competitions have been scored by former – or in this case, current – Los Blancos players.
OFF THE BAR! Remiro was beaten that time, as Ramos directed a header onto the crossbar. However, it would not have counted, with the linesman raising the flag for offside.
SAVE! End-to-end stuff now at Santiago Bernabeu, as Ramiro makes two vital interventions in quick succession, first getting a toe to Vinicius’ pass – which would have provided Benzema with an easy finish – before he then kept out a stinging drive from Valverde.
Poor from Odegaard! That really should have been 2-0 to Sociedad, as Isak again instigates an attack, this time cutting in from the left flank. Januzaj joins in and manages to tee up Odegaard but, despite having the perfect opportunity to shoot, the playmaker hesitates, allowing Madrid’s defence to recover.
Very nearly the curse of the commentator there, at least for Sociedad! A loose ball fell to James 25 yards out and the Colombia midfielder showed no hesitation in rattling a strike goalwards. Remiro, though, is equal to it and makes a solid save diving to his right.
Madrid have had 57.1 per cent of the possession so far, but as of yet have not created any clear-cut chances against a well-drilled Sociedad defence.
Isak has been a thorn in Madrid’s side throughout and very nearly gets through one-on-one with Areola, still managing to get a show away. But Ramos tracked him all the way, doing brilliantly to force a goal-kick.
Odegaard goes down around 30 yards out from Madrid’s goal, clutching his left thigh after he was clattered into by Marcelo. However, it does not appear he will require any treatment.
Zidane’s side have won their last eight games in all competitions, but so far have been second best tonight. They build some pressure, only for Kroos to blaze over from the edge of the box.
Some last-ditch defending from Militao, who may have just saved Madrid from going 2-0 down by intercepting Merino’s pass which looked destined to put Oyarzabal through. Los Blancos are straight back on the front foot, but Benzema is just unable to get on the end of Vinicius’ cutback.
Madrid had just started to exert some control over proceedings but Sociedad now have something to cling onto. The hosts attempt to switch the play, with Diaz the target, but the diminutive winger cannot keep it in play and the move breaks down.
GOOOAAALLL! IT’S 1-0 TO SOCIEDAD AND IT’S ODEGAARD WHO HAS SCORED IT! Well, that is certainly a moment to remember for the Sociedad man, who does not celebrate against his parent club, but it is a moment to forget for Areola. The goalkeeper parried out Isak’s effort but could not react in time to deny Odegaard on the rebound, with the midfielder’s crisp first-time strike leaving the France international flat-footed.
Great work from Vinicius, who charges down the left wing at full throttle, taking several Sociedad defenders with him. Despite being under pressure, the Brazilian still manages to dig out a cross, which Nacho meets, only to slice his effort.
James takes the free-kick, but gets far too much power and lift on his strike, which sails harmlessly over the crossbar.
R. Le Normand
Another booking for Sociedad, as defender Le Normand receives a caution for dragging down Diaz around 25 yards out.
Isak meets the resulting corner, but fails to connect with his attempted volley and Madrid clear their lines.
A first chance of the game, and it goes Sociedad’s way. Isak slipped a neat pass through to Januzaj, who managed to get a shot off from a tight angle. Militao, however, had tracked the winger’s run and makes the block.
No real opening for either side as of yet, with much of the plays having come in midfield. Madrid manage to work a move down the left, but Vinicius’ early cross is blocked and Sociedad regroup.
Odegaard is sure to be eager to show Madrid what they are missing, but now he has that booking the Norwegian will just have to keep a lid on his emotions and let his skill on the ball do the talking, rather than his work off it.
Odegaard has received the first booking of the game, having lunched in on Madrid captain Ramos.
Sociedad striker Isak is currently the joint-top scorer in this season’s Copa del Rey with five goals, level with Matheus – a forward on loan at Mirandes from Watford.
Vinicius came on and changed the Madrid derby on Saturday and the winger has looked sharp in the opening exchanges. It is a huge opportunity for him – along with Diaz on the other side – to impress Zidane today.
Both sides have ventures forward in the opening minutes. First, Areola comes out to claim a cross from Sociedad’s right flank, before James sees a strike blocked before it reaches the target at the other end.
This is a huge match for one player in particular – Sociedad playmaker Odegaard. The youngster made headlines when he signed for Madrid in 2015, though he is just now coming into his own in LaLiga. He is playing against his parent club tonight and has been a star for the Basque side this season.
KICK-OFF! Madrid, wearing their famous all white strip, get this quarter-final up and running.
The teams are out and we are just moments away from kick-off at Santiago Bernabeu, with a semi-final place at stake. Granada and lower-tier side Mirandes are already through.
Sociedad went down 2-1 to a late Oscar Rodriguez goal against Leganes on Sunday, and there are four changes from coach Imanol Alguacil, who benched key players Odegaard and Oyarzabal last time out, seemingly in preparation for this match. Willian Jose is in reserve for the visitors if required, with the striker having failed to secure a move away in January.
REAL SOCIEDAD SUBS: Miguel Angel Moya, Willian Jose, Portu, Joseba Zaldua, Ander Guevara, Ander Barrenetxea, Aihen Munoz.
REAL SOCIEDAD (4-1-4-1): Alex Remiro; Andoni Gorosabel, Aritz Elustondo, Robin Le Normand, Nacho Monreal; Igor Zubeldia; Adnan Januzaj, Martin Odegaard, Mikel Merino, Mikel Oyarzabal; Alexander Isak.
Seven changes from Zinedine Zidane, whose side defeated city rivals Atletico Madrid last time out. Areola, Marcelo, Militao, Nacho, James, Diaz and Vinicius all come in, while there is still no space in the squad for Gareth Bale and Eden Hazard is not quite up to fitness.
REAL MADRID SUBS: Raphael Varane, Luka Modric, Thibaut Courtois, Luka Jovic, Isco, Ferland Mendy, Rodrygo Goes.
REAL MADRID (4-3-3): Alphonse Areola; Nacho, Eder Militao, Sergio Ramos, Marcelo; Federico Valverde, Toni Kroos, James Rodriguez; Brahim Diaz, Karim Benzema, Vinicius Jr.
Sociedad, who last won the Copa del Rey in 1987, sit eighth in LaLiga, having lost two of their last three league outings. They have defeated Becerril Campos – 8-0 – Ceuta, Espanyol and Osasuna on the way to this stage.
Madrid – 19-time Copa winners – reached the semi-finals last term, only to be hammered 4-1 over two legs by Barcelona, who were eventually beaten by Valencia in the final. Los Blancos’ recent record in the competition is not great, however, given they have not won it since 2013-14.
Hello and welcome to LIVE coverage of the Copa del Rey quarter-final between Real Madrid and Real Sociedad!
