Commentary

That concludes our commentary of the World Cup qualifying match between Montenegro and the Netherlands! We hope you’ve enjoyed it!
Montenegro finish their World Cup qualifying campaign at home against Turkey on Tuesday, while the Netherlands return to Rotterdam to host Norway on the same day in a match that will most likely decide the group winners.
Six mad minutes at the end of the second half sees Montenegro come back from a two-goal deficit to earn a 2-2 draw in Podgorica, which keeps group G hanging in the balance. Depay’s first-half penalty was doubled in the second half when the Barcelona forward beat Sarkic with a lovely backheel flick, which seemed to put the Oranje in an unassailable position. Dominating both time on the ball and total passes, Van Gaal’s side seemed destined to wrap up qualification but with eight minutes to go, Osmajic pulled one back for the hosts with a lovely finish from inside the penalty area. Just four minutes later, however, Vujnovic’s header from a Radunovic cross would beat Bijlow and level the match spectacularly. The unexpected draw sees Van Gaal’s side go two points clear of Turkey and Norway who are tied for second, with all three sides still able to qualify as section winners. The draw will no doubt boost the confidence of the Montenegro side but they are unable to move up or down from fourth place.
90' + 5' FULL-TIME: MONTENEGRO 2-2 NETHERLANDS.
90' + 4' The fourth official indicates four minutes will be added to the end of the 90 for stoppages.
90' + 2' Depay’s free-kick clears the wall but Sarkic makes a crucial catch, preventing any rebound.
S. Savić

Montenegro
90' + 1' Savic is booked for a cynical foul on Depay just outside Montenegro's penalty area.
M. de Ligt
S. de Vrij
Netherlands
90' De Vrij limps off with an apparent injury as De Ligt is sent on to replace him.
88' Six minutes of madness for the hosts, who somehow find themselves level after two quick goals. The Oranje don’t look as though they’re able to process what happened as Koopmeiners gives away another free-kick.
R. Radunović
Assist
Montenegro
86' Radunovic's inch-perfect cross is awarded as the assist on Montenegro's second goal.
N. Vujnović
Goal
Montenegro
86' MONTENEGRO FIND THEMSELVES LEVEL! WHAT DRAMA! Unbelievable scenes in Podgorica as Radunovic’s cross from the left wing finds Vujnovic - who beats Blind for strength and powers a header into the far corner! It’s 2-2!
84' Montenegro have only scored in one of their last four matches before today; in a 3-0 win over Gibraltar. They have been held to without a goal in that time by the Netherlands, Latvia and Norway - earning just one point in the process.
M. Osmajić
Assist
Montenegro
82' Osmajic has been Montenegro's liveliest player going forward and he receives his award with an assist for Vukotic's goal.
I. Vukotić
Goal
Montenegro
82' MONTENEGRO GET ONE BACK! It's a lovely move as Beciraj's pass with the outside of his boot releases Osmajic on the left-hand side. The winger unselfishly plays Vukotic into the penalty area, who rounds the keeper with confidence and deposits the ball into the empty net! 2-1!
M. Raičković
Ž. Tomašević

R. Gravenberch
F. de Jong
Netherlands
78' Another change in midfield for the Oranje sees Gravenberch sent on for De Jong.
77' Dumfries drives to the right corner of the six-yard box after a clever Bergwijn pass but can only send his shot wide of the near post in disappointing fashion.
75' The Netherlands have scored nine of their 31 goals between the 75th and 90th minute; 29%. This is by far and away the most prolific period of the match for Van Gaal’s side
73' Blind’s cynical kick catches Vukcevic on the back of the leg, sending the wing-back down to the ground in front of the technical area. It’s not a booking for the Ajax full-back, but he has given his opponent a free-kick.
71' Blind plays a dangerous and disguised cross to the penalty spot which goes undealt with by Savic, forcing Tomasevic to come across and boot the ball out of play.
I. Vukotić
S. Hakšabanović
Montenegro
69' Haksabanovic is the latest to make way as Vukotic is chosen to see out the remainder of the game.
D. Božović
M. Janković
Montenegro
69' Bozovic is sent on for Jankovic as Montenegro continue to search for answers.
N. Vujnović
Yellow Card
Montenegro
68' Vujnovic is booked just six minutes after coming on the pitch for a reckless sliding challenge on De Jong.
T. Koopmeiners
G. Wijnaldum
Netherlands
66' Wijnaldum's rather uneventful match comes to an end 24 minutes from time as Atalanta's Koopmeiners gets a chance in midfield.
64' The Netherlands keep 10 men in the Montenegro penalty area as they continue to look for goals - sensing opportunities to widen the gap between the two sides. They don’t seem to be in any rush, however, as they look comfortable knocking it around from wing to wing.
F. Bećiraj
U. Đurđević
Montenegro
62' It's two alterations at once as Djurdjevic also makes way for Beciraj.
N. Vujnović
V. Jovović
Montenegro
62' Vujnovic is sent on for Jovovic as Montenegro make their first change of the game.
60' The hosts look to be preparing a substitute as we enter the final 30 minutes, as Radulovic seems unimpressed with the way his attack has been blunted in the second half.
58' The Netherlands are playing with a lot more confidence as Montenegro are being kept ever-more quiet as the match progresses. Their best chance at a result was to take one of their early chances but it’ll be a monumental task to get back into the match now - especially with the visitors’ level of dominance.
56' The Netherlands and Montenegro have only ever met one time before; two months ago in Eindhoven. The hosts won that day 4-0 thanks to three goals after the 60th minute after a relatively tight opening hour.
D. Dumfries
Assist
Netherlands
54' Assist Denzel Justus Morris Dumfries
M. Depay
Goal
Netherlands
54' THE NETHERLANDS DOUBLE THEIR LEAD! 2-0! AND WHAT A GOAL! Dumfries fires a low cross to the near post for Depay, whose deft backheel flick wrong-foots Sarkic and beats the goalkeeper! It's his 11th of the campaign!
53' It’s a dangerous delivery but Van Dijk is able to win the ball in the air and present it to Blind, who whacks the danger away.
52' Now Jovovic finds himself on the ground after taking a whack in the face from an unassuming Blind. It’s a free-kick for Montenegro right in front of the technical areas, which Jankovic will deliver.
50' Osmajic took a nasty tumble over the goalkeeper during the last play, resulting in the Montenegro player needing a bit of treatment. He’s got an ice bag on his head and is slow to get up but he should be alright to continue.
48' Osmajic gets all the way into the penalty area after a lengthy run down the left but the combination of Dumfries and Bijlow combine to rob the winger of possession before he could get a shot away.
46' The Netherlands get the match restarted from the kick-off!
S. Bergwijn
D. Malen
Netherlands
46' Malen is replaced by Bergwijn at half-time as Van Gaal makes a change in attack.
Van Gaal will have to decide whether to stick or twist, as a 1-0 win would be enough to get the job done, though that could result in a rather nervy second frame. With quality all over their bench, the creative Lang or the versatile Gravenberch could be best-poised to make an impact. Montenegro are not out of it yet though and could be even more of a threat should they open up and attack - with nothing left to play for but pride. The last time these two met, today’s hosts conceded three goals in the second half and could look to just better their result last time out.
The Netherlands take a 1-0 lead into the interval in Podgorica, after Depay converted a 25th minute penalty, won by Klaassen. The Oranje dominated possession as expected, often camping all 10 outfield players inside Montenegro’s half in an attempt to break down the low block. Danjuma was the most effective presence on the pitch for Van Gaal’s side but ineffective finishing kept the score down. The hosts were dangerous despite registering little in the way of passes or pass success but they used set-pieces to their advantage and mustered seven total shots - four more than their opponents. The match still hangs in the balance at the Stadion Pod Goricom, with the Netherlands posed to qualify for the World Cup with a win.
45' + 2' HALF-TIME: MONTENEGRO 0-1 NETHERLANDS.
45' + 1' The fourth official indicates two minutes will be added to the end of the half for stoppages.
44' Haksabanovic whips the free-kick on the right to the far post with tremendous bend but it evades his team-mates and bounces behind for a goal-kick.
D. Dumfries
Yellow Card
Netherlands
42' Dumfries is shown the first yellow card of the match for elbowing Osmajic in the face during an attempt to shield the ball 25 yards from Bijlow’s goal.
41' Haksabanovic delivers a corner from the left looking for the far post but a confident Bijlow steps six yards off his line and wins the ball in the air.
39' Montenegro are appealing for a penalty as they are convinced there was a handball in the penalty area which blocked Osmajic’s header, which was bound for goal. Match official Carlos del Cerro Grande doesn’t see anything wrong with the defending and allows play to continue despite the protestations.
37' De Jong plays an early ball into the penalty area for Depay, which prompts Savic to come across and block off the striker’s path - allowing Sarkic to collect it comfortably.
35' Malen beats his man on the right and pulls a lovely, low cross back to the penalty spot for Danjuma. The winger hits the effort at the first time of asking but he sends his chance narrowly wide of the post!
33' Despite virtually no time on the ball, Montenegro looked threatening at times in the first 30 minutes, getting into the penalty area on a number of occasions and challenging from set-pieces. It’s going to be even more difficult to assert themselves in the match now, however, as they find themselves behind.
31' Depay plays a free-kick 35 yards from goal towards the back post but the referee’s whistle goes almost immediately as Van Dijk is called for a foul in the build-up.
29' Vukcevic’s cross from the right finds the head of Osmajic at the near post - but the midfielder sends his chance over the bar!
27' De Vrij hits a pass over the top of Montenegro’s defence from inside his own half, prompting Malen to give chase. Sarkic reads the danger well though and comes off his line to get to it first - ending the move.
M. Depay
Penalty Goal
Netherlands
25' NEVER IN DOUBT! Sarkic goes the right way but Depay tucks his penalty away underneath the outstretched arm of the goalkeeper. It’s a cool penalty from the Barcelona forward, who gives his side a 1-0 lead!
23' PENALTY TO THE NETHERLANDS! Klaassen gets onto the loose ball in the penalty area with his back to goal, which invites a rather needless challenge from Jankovic! The Ajax midfielder goes over and wins his side a spot-kick after it was deemed the contact occurred inside the area.
21' Montenegro get a second chance at a corner, this time from the left which Haksabanovic takes to Vujacic. The defender manages to get to the delivery but his awkward header pops up and over the crossbar.
20' Jankovic’s corner from the right is a dangerous inswinger that De Vrij manages to get to first - heading the danger away with emphasis.
18' CHANCE FOR MONTENEGRO! A high cross from deep in midfield by Tomasevic gets between De Vrij and Van Dijk, where it falls kindly for Jovovic. The winger’s first touch takes him wide and he’s only able to hit the side netting despite dragging Bijlow off his line!
16' The Netherlands have dominated the opening phase of the match, seeing more than 80% possession while logging more than 90 more passes than their opponents. Set up with five at the back, Montenegro will look to take what they can get on the counter-attack, dropping deep and defending in a low block to win the ball.
14' Depay teases a cross inside the penalty area from just outside the penalty area but Tomasevic is able to rise highest to intercept the delivery.
12' Blind hangs a cross to the far post for Dumfries, who is unable to reach it as Haksabanovic comes across and wins possession before calmly dribbling the ball out of his penalty area.
10' De Jong turns the ball over in midfield but Van Dijk does a great job defending in his own penalty area, preventing Djurdjevic from getting a shot away.
8' The Montenegro number nine - Jankovic - does a good job defending in his own penalty area, showing Danjuma wide and forcing a goal-kick as the Netherlands launch every attack down the left side.
6' It’s been all Danjuma in the opening five minutes as the Villarreal winger breaks into the penalty area and goes down after a physical duel with Vujacic. The referee sides with the defender though and awards the hosts a free-kick inside Sarkic’s box.
5' Van Dijk steps into midfield and plays a splitting pass through the heart of Montenegro’s defence for Danjuma, who gets on the end of it and triggers the linesman’s flag for offside.
3' Danjuma gets free down the left after a lovely pass from Blind but his volleyed cross sails high over the crossbar and out for a goal-kick.
1' Montenegro get the match underway from the kick-off!
Van Gaal makes two alterations to the XI that beat Gibraltar last time out, with both wingers replaced. Depay will play on the wing allowing Malen to start through the middle ahead of Lang, while Steven Burghuis is left out of the squad which provides a place for Villarreal’s Danjuma.
Montenegro make five changes from the side that lost 2-0 to Norway last time out. Savic returns to captain the side in defence replacing the red-carded Marko Vesovic, while Vukcevic plays as the right-sided wing-back, taking the place of Nebojsa Kosovic. Osmajic gets a spot in midfield ahead of Aleksandar Scekic and the unavailability of both Stevan Jovetic and Lazio’s Adam Marusic sees Jovovic and Djurdjevic form a partnership in attack.
NETHERLANDS SUBS: Steven Bergwijn, Matthijs de Ligt, Wout Weghorst, Ryan Gravenberch, Mark Flekken, Jasper Cillessen, Devyne Rensch, Teun Koopmeiners, Guus Til, Nathan Ake, Noa Lang, Tyrell Malacia.
NETHERLANDS XI (4-3-3): Justin Bijlow; Denzel Dumfries, Stefan de Vrij, Virgil van Dijk, Daley Blind; Georginio Wijnaldum, Davy Klaassen, Frenkie de Jong; Memphis Depay, Donyell Malen, Arnaut Danjuma.
MONTENEGRO SUBS: Marko Simic, Milos Raickovic, Fatos Beciraj, Luka Mirkovic, Jasmin Agovic, Milan Mijatovic, Ilija Vukotic, Meldin Dreskovic, Drasko Bozovic, Nikola Vujnovic.
MONTENEGRO XI (5-3-2): Matija Sarkic; Risto Radunovic, Zarko Tomasevic, Stefan Savic, Igor Vujacic, Marko Vukcevic; Sead Haksabanovic, Milutin Osmajic, Marko Jankovic; Vladimir Jovovic, Uros Djurdjevic.
With 15 minutes to go before kick-off, let's take a look at how the two sides are lining up - starting with our hosts!
Results went against Montenegro earlier, who are now out of the running for potential qualification. Seven points back of the second-place play-off with just two matches left, coach Miodrag Radulovic will use the remainder of their fixtures with one eye towards the future as they are unable to move up or down in the group.
The Netherlands top group G with two matches left to go, as Louis van Gaal’s side look to re-establish their four-point lead over Turkey as well as Norway, who are tied for second. A victory would guarantee the Oranje passage to the World Cup proper in 2022, while anything less would keep the door open for either of the aforementioned challengers to sneak through as group winners on the final day.
