Commentary

FULL-TIME: Mexico 3-1 El Salvador. It was comfortable in the end for the defending champions, but they were troubled early. Marin headed in the opener before Bonilla’s immediate response for El Salvador. But Elias Hernandez and Pineda struck either side of half-time to seal a win in Group C. Hernandez finished the encounter with a goal and two assists in an impressive display. Mexico are back in action against Jamaica on Thursday, while El Salvador face Curacao.

But Elias Hernandez – who set up the opener – volleyed in to restore Mexico's lead in the 29th minute. Both teams have had their chances, with El Salvador pushing the defending champions.

Mexico are of course also without head coach Juan Carlos Osorio, who received a six-game ban for abuse of match officials during a clash against Portugal in Russia.
