Commentary

Boos ring around the stadium as the two sets of fans make their way off the pitch. The Cagliari fans are going absolutely crazy, and it's no wonder why. They did wonderfully well to fight from 1-0 down to leave with three well-deserved points, but Inter only have themselves to blame. The hosts were incredibly poor for the vast majority of the game and fell apart at the back, where lacklustre defending hit them hard on two occasions late on.
FULL-TIME: INTER 1-2 CAGLIARI
90' + 4' Inter break forward on one last attack before Mario wins the home side a corner on the left wing. He steps up and curls a cross into the penalty area, where almost every black and blue shirt is waiting, but Tachtsidis is there to rise high and head the ball away from danger before the referee blows his whistle for the final time.
90' + 3' Padoin goes close! Cagliari hit Inter on a quick counter-attack after dealing with the danger, and it's one that almost results in a late chance for the visitors. The midfielder twists and turns as he weaves his way inside the box, but he's put under pressure by Medel and eventually ends up running the ball into the hands of Handanovic.
90' + 2' What a chance for Eder to equalise! An Inter corner is sent short and worked over to Perisic, who then curls a dangerous cross into the middle of the penalty area, but the striker is unable to make decent contact with the ball with his head and sees it deflect a few yards wide of the far post.
90' + 1' Almost a chance for Borriello! Melchiorri, who has been excellent during the second half, cuts inside from the right wing before firing a dangerous cross towards Borriello at the near post, but Santon is just about able to cut out the danger before the striker can meet the ball inside the six-yard box.
90' The fourth official has indicated that there will be four minutes of added time.
89' Isla almost makes it 3-1! Inter push plenty of bodies forward and leave themselves completely open at the back. Cagliari deal with the danger from a corner before hitting the home side on another counter-attack, but Isla is unable to beat Handanovic from just inside the penalty area and ends up firing his shot straight at the Slovenian goalkeeper.
N. Barella
Yellow Card
Cagliari
87' A thumping strike from Borriello stings the palms of Handanovic, and the visitors then fly forward once again on another counter-attack. Barella picks up the ball on the edge of the penalty area and looks set to shoot, but his first touch is poor and sends it into the feet of Miranda, who is then brought crashing to the ground by a lunging challenge from the substitute.
S. Handanovič
Own Goal
Internazionale
85' GOAL! Cagliari have taken the lead! The visitors win themselves a corner, and it's one that Handanovic flaps at and completely misses. Melchiorri picks up the ball over on the right-hand side of the penalty area before firing a low cross-cum-shot back towards goal, and Handanovic ends up taking the ball over the line with him as he rushes back to try and deal with the danger. It's all gone wrong for Inter!
83' Eder breaks into the right-hand side of the Cagliari penalty area before taking on Ceppitelli near to the byline. The striker shepherds the ball out of play before going to take a corner, but the referee instead awards a goal-kick to the visitors, much to the disbelief of the home fans and players, all of whom were certain the decision should have gone their way.
81' So close from Melchiorri! Isla swings a wonderful cross over to the far post, where it finds Melchiorri, but the goalscorer is unable to double his tally and instead sends his bullet header just an inch or two wide of the far post. Handanovic had been left rooted to the spot and was well beaten!
S. Jovetić
C. Ansaldi
Internazionale
80' Inter have made their final change of the game, and, unsurprisingly, it's an attacking one, with Jovetic coming on to take the place of Ansaldi.
79' Santon twists and turns deep down the left flank before swinging a cross into the middle of the penalty area that's well dealt with by the Cagliari defence. Medel picks up the ball just outside of the box, however, and quickly unleashes a shot, but his scuffs his effort into the ground and well wide of its intended target.
P. Tachtsidis
Yellow Card
Cagliari
78' Cagliari lose the ball in the middle of the pitch and allow Mario the chance to break forward quickly. The Brazilian bursts into the visitors' half of the pitch as he heads towards the penalty area, but he's cynically pulled back by Tachtsidis and the Greek midfielder is shown a yellow card.
N. Barella
D. Di Gennaro
Cagliari
77' Di Gennaro goes down with cramp just outside of the Inter penalty area and receives treatment from the Cagliari medical team before eventually making way for Barella.
75' Perisic gets himself into a good position just outside of the Cagliari penalty area after cutting inside from the right, but he's unable to beat Storari from 20 yards out and instead sends a tame, bouncing effort straight to the veteran goalkeeper in the middle of the goal.
Eder
A. Candreva
Internazionale
74' Candreva, who has had a disappointing game over on the right flank, makes way for Eder for the final quarter of an hour.
73' After bringing to an end a half-hearted Inter attacking move, Cagliari try to break forward on a counter-attack over on the left wing. Padoin gets himself into a good position before trying to pick out Melchiorri with a thumped pass into the penalty area, but it's overhit and ends up bouncing into the hands of Handanovic.
F. Melchiorri
Goal
Cagliari
71' GOAL! Cagliari have equalised! Inter completely fall asleep inside their own penalty area and allow a bouncing pass forward from Di Gennaro to find Melchiorri in front of goal. The striker is in a great position on the edge of the six-yard box and isn't dealt with by Miranda, who allows him to spin and tap a shot past Handanovic and into the back of the net.
M. Isla
G. Munari
Cagliari
69' Cagliari have made their second alteration of the day, with Munari making way for Isla.
68' What a chance for Icardi! Once again, Ansaldi gets himself into a great position deep down the right wing before sending another dangerous cross towards Icardi. This time it finds the Inter captain, but, somehow, he ends up sending his header wide of the near post despite being left in acres of space by the Cagliari defenders.
67' Ansaldi bursts down the right wing on a good run before swinging a cross into the Cagliari penalty area and over to Icardi, but the striker ends up missing the ball by the narrowest of margins before Pisacane is just about able to clear the danger with a header out of the box.
65' The ball pinballs around midway inside the Cagliari half of the pitch before falling to Icardi, who breaks forward but is tripped over by a clumsy sliding challenge from Murru. It results in a free-kick that Candreva fires towards goal, but the winger's shot is poor and sails straight into the wall of white shirts camped on the edge of the box.
63' Santon is penalised for a high foot down the right wing, and Cagliari are awarded a free-kick as a result. Di Gennaro steps up and fires a looping cross into the heart of the Inter penalty area, but the home side have plenty of bodies back to deal with the danger.
G. Munari
Yellow Card
Cagliari
61' A clumsy challenge from Munari results in a yellow card for the Cagliari midfielder and a free-kick for Inter in the middle of the pitch.
A. Gnoukouri
É. Banega
Internazionale
60' Meanwhile, Gnoukouri has come to replace Banega for Inter.
M. Borriello
M. Sau
Cagliari
60' Cagliari have made their first substitution of the game, with Sau making way for Borriello.
59' It's end to end stuff at the moment! This time it's Banega who gets a shot away from 20 yards after embarking on a purposeful run forward, but it's with his weaker foot and he ends up scuffing his effort comfortably wide of the near post.
57' What a save by Handanovic! A low cross from Murru is deflected off a black and blue shirt and into the path of Di Gennaro on the edge of the penalty area, but the midfielder's thumping volley is sent straight at Handanovic and well stopped by the Slovenian, who has pulled off several great saves over the past few minutes to keep his side in front.
João Mário
Goal
Internazionale
55' GOAL! Inter have taken the lead! Perisic breaks down the left wing on a good run before finally managing to pick out a player inside the penalty area. This time it's Mario, whose first-time shot is well saved by Storari before he pokes a follow-up into the back of the net from close range.
54' Cagliari score, but it's ruled out for offside! Inter are all over the place at the back and allows Pisacane to break down the right wing before firing a low cross into the box, but Melchiorri's shot is well saved by Handanovic. The goalkeeper is called into action again by a curling follow-up from Sau before Pisacane finally pokes a shot under the Slovenian and into the back of the net. The full-back darts away and starts celebrating, but the linesman's flag is quickly raised and denies the visitors the opening goal of the game.
52' Cagliari move the ball around nicely deep down the left wing before Melchiorri plays a pass off the feet of Murillo and out for a corner. Di Gennaro steps up and a great cross towards Ceppitelli, but the defender ends up missing making contact with the ball by the narrowest of margins.
50' A Cagliari attacking move comes to a disappointing end and now it's Inter's turn to counter. Banega darts through the middle of the pitch before working the ball over to Candreva on the right flank, but again the winger's cross towards Icardi is poor and fails to find its way past Alves.
49' What an opportunity for Di Gennaro! Inter lose the ball in the middle of the pitch and Cagliari immediately hit them on a quick counter through Tachtsidis. The Greek midfielder bursts forward and then sets up Di Gennaro on the edge of the penalty area, but the latter is unable to beat Handanovic with his curling shot towards the far post.
47' Inter win themselves an early corner over on the right flank, but it fails to result in a chance on goal after being played short. The home side quickly regain possession, however, before Perisic threads a clever through-ball into the penalty area, but Icardi's run forward is slightly mistimed and the linesman's flag is quickly raised as a result.
46' And we're underway once again!
The two teams are making their way back out on to the pitch ahead of the start of the second half. Neither side have made any substitutions during the half-time break.
It's been a frustrating first half for Inter, who arguably should be ahead after being awarded a soft penalty but, either side of that, have created few chances in front of goal. The home side have dominated possession but have failed to do much with it, resulting in Perisic and Candreva firing an endless stream of poor crosses towards Icardi, who should have buried his chance from the penalty spot and has seen little of the ball since then.
HALF-TIME: INTER 0-0 CAGLIARI
45' The Inter fans are becoming increasingly frustrated with what they're watching. The home side have dominated possession but are struggling to do much with it, as time after time the Cagliari defence are easily able to deal with all of the hopeful balls that have been thumped into the box.
43' Mario does well to find himself in a pocket of space on the edge of the Cagliari penalty area after the defenders back off ever so slightly, but he can't direct his low strike on target and instead watches it sail a few yards wide of the far post.
M. Sau
Yellow Card
Cagliari
42' Sau tries to break away on a counter-attack down the right wing, but he's far too slow in possession and ends up losing out just outside of the Inter penalty area. He then takes out his frustration on Miranda with a poor challenge, and it's one that results in a yellow card for the striker.
41' Inter haven't look at all quick enough in and around the Cagliari penalty area, and it's made life relatively easy for the visitors. Mario tries to change that with a purposeful run forward and lovely threaded through-ball into the path of Icardi, but the striker is unable to get a shot away and instead has to tee up Perisic, who then fires a strike off the foot of Pisacane and away from the box.
40' Another Candreva cross is sent into the Cagliari box but fails to find a black and blue shirt. It almost reaches Icardi, who had made a good run across the penalty area, but the striker decides to leave it for Perisic despite their being two defenders camped in front of the Croatian.
39' Candreva cuts inside from the right wing and heads towards the Cagliari penalty area before unleashing a rocket of a shot from 25 yards out, but it takes a deflection off the foot of Padoin that sends it bouncing into the hands of Storari at the far post.
38' Another cross is sent towards Icardi, but again Inter have to settle for a corner. Banega's corner is poor but rolls back to the Argentine, who then fires a low cross towards Murillo, but Ceppitelli is there to stick out a foot to stop the ball from finding the defender.
36' Candreva holds up the ball deep down the right channel as he tries to find a way into the Cagliari penalty area, but he ends up poking the ball over to Ansaldi, who then fires a cross off the head of Alves and out for a corner. Once again, it's whipped towards the near post, but the visitors are easily able to deal with the danger.
34' Perisic gets himself into a good position over on the left flank and quickly whips a bouncing cross towards the near post. Icardi runs towards the ball and looks set to meet it in front of goal, but at the vital moment Ceppitelli is able to thump it away from the Argentine.
32' Chance for Mario! Another good run down the right flank from Candreva results in a dangerous cross being curled into the middle of the box, where it's only half cleared by Pisacane. The full-back thumps the ball to the edge of the penalty area, where it finds Mario, but the Brazilian is unable to hit the target with his first-time volley and ends up sending it bouncing a few yards wide of the far post.
31' Candreva gets himself into a great position over on the right wing before swinging a cross towards the near post, but Alves is there to head the ball out for a corner. The set-piece is taken quickly and sent back to the near post, but once again it fails to result on a chance on goal for the home side.
29' The ball pinballs around the Inter penalty area before it falls to Padoin in a good position over on the left-hand side, but the midfielder is unable to find a way past Murillo and ends up firing a thumping volleyed shot off the defender and out for a rare Cagliari corner.
João Mário
Yellow Card
Internazionale
27' Mario clumsily lunges into Alves and becomes the latest player to receive a yellow card.
M. Icardi
Penalty Miss
Internazionale
26' MISS! Icardi steps up and side-foots a poor shot comfortably wide of the post. Has the pre-game controversy surrounding him and the Inter ultras had an impact on his mindset? He didn't look at all comfortable as he waited to take the penalty.
Bruno Alves
Yellow Card
Cagliari
24' PENALTY! Alves pushes Icardi to the ground inside the penalty area as the striker waits for a cross to come into the penalty area, but the referee initially allows play to go on. However, about 30 seconds later he decides to point to the spot, presumably after hearing something from one of his assistants. The Cagliari players are furious with the decision, and it's no wonder why!
23' Poor from Candreva! The winger shows great skill to nutmeg Murru before heading into the right-hand side of the Cagliari penalty area, but he undoes all of his good work with an awful cross that bounces straight into the hands of Storari instead of picking out Icardi.
22' Perisic skips past Pisacane before being clumsily barged to the ground by the Cagliari full-back, and Inter are awarded a free-kick in a very dangerous position just outside of the penalty area. Banega steps up and curls a cross towards the edge of the six-yard box, but it's comfortably punched away by Storari.
21' A rare foray past the halfway line for Di Gennaro is brought to an end by Medel, who then quickly works the ball over Perisic. The Croatian breaks down the left wing on a marauding run before firing a dangerous low pass across the face of goal, but there's nobody there to meet it and Storari is once again able to deal with the danger coming from the home side.
19' It's all Inter as they continue to put an incredible amount of pressure on Cagliari. The visitors have really struggled to break out of their own half of the pitch thus far, allowing the home side to boss possession as they desperately search for an opener.
17' Great opportunity for Candreva! Tachtsidis loses out in the middle of the pitch, gifting Banega with a chance to break forward quickly. The Argentine initially fails to find Icardi with a deft through-ball before sending a dangerous cross over to the far post, but Candreva snatches at the ball and ends up firing his thumping volley comfortably wide of the goal.
15' After a frantic opening 15 minutes, the pace of the game has slowed down somewhat as Cagliari start to push further up the pitch. The visitors have largely been camped inside their own half as they try and deal with Inter, who have looked impressive in advanced areas.
13' Vital interception by Murillo! Inter lose the ball midway inside the Cagliari half of the pitch and the visitors immediately hit them on a swift counter-attack. Sau breaks forward on a quick run before trying to thread a pass into the path of Melchiorri, but Murillo is there to stick out a foot to stop the ball from finding the striker, who had made a great run into space.
12' Inter come back again quickly as Perisic once again finds himself in a pocket of space over on the left flank, but this time he takes slightly too long on the ball and is quickly closed down by a group of white shirts before he can whip a cross into the heart of the Cagliari penalty area.
10' Perisic breaks down the left wing and battles with Pisacane before being pulled back by the full-back, but the referee ignores his pleas for a free-kick and instead only awards Inter a throw-in. It's sent short and worked back to Perisic, but the Croatian's excellent cross towards Icardi is cut out by Alves before it can find the Argentine in front of goal.
8' Sau initially does well to deal with a swinging cross from the resulting corner but can't clear the danger, allowing Candreva to come back quickly. The winger nutmegs the Cagliari striker and heads towards the edge of the penalty area before firing a low cross into the box, but it's sent too near to Storari and the goalkeeper is easily able to cut out the danger.
7' Tachtsidis is fouled by Banega midway inside the Cagliari half of the pitch, and Inter are awarded a free-kick in an advantageous position. Banega steps up and lifts a lovely cross towards Mario at the far post, but Pisacane is there to head the ball out for a corner.
5' After dealing with a second Cagliari corner, Inter quickly break away on a counter-attack. Mario bursts through the middle of the pitch before trying to tee up Icardi inside the visitors' box, but his pass is poor and is easily dealt with by Alves, who chests the ball into the hands of Storari.
4' What a chance for Ceppitelli! The corner is whipped to the near post, where it finds the Cagliari defender. He does well to skip in front of Perisic before sending a glancing head towards the top left-hand corner of the net, but it ends up spinning just wide of the goal after beating Handanovic.
3' Melchiorri skips down the left channel before being clumsily tripped over by Ansaldi, resulting in a free-kick for Cagliari. It's taken quickly and sent over to the right flank, where it finds Pisacane, and the full-back does well to force Santon into poking the ball out for a corner.
2' Inter patiently move the ball around inside the Cagliari half of the pitch before Candreva tries to pick out Icardi with a quickly struck pass from the right flank, but the striker is a yard or two offside and the linesman's flag is raised as soon as he makes contact with the ball on the edge of the penalty area.
1' And we're off! Inter get us underway, attacking from left to right.
1' Tachtsidis loses out in the middle of the pitch and allows Inter to break away on a quick counter-attack. It's Banega who brings the ball forward before teeing up Candreva over on the right wing, but once again the former Lazio man's cross is poor and sails straight into the hands of Storari.
The two sides are making their way out onto the pitch, with just a few minutes to go until kick-off.
Frank de Boer has decided to name an unchanged Inter side to the one that started the defeat against Roma just before the international break, whilst Cagliari boss Massimo Rastelli has made three alterations to the side that featured against Crotone in their last outing, with Marco Storari, Gianni Munari and Federico Melchiorri coming into the starting line-up to replace Rafael, Fabio Pisacane and Marco Borriello, respectively.
Cagliari substitutes: Rafael, Isla, Dessena, Colombo, Barella, Borriello, Capuano, Bittante, Giannetti, Salamon.
Cagliari XI (4-3-1-2): Storari; Pisacane, Ceppitelli, Alves, Murru; Munari, Tachtsidis, Padoin; Di Gennaro; Sau, Melchiorri.
Inter substitutes: Kondogbia, Palacio, Jovetic, Eder, Gnoukouri, Carrizo, D’Ambrosio, Nagatomo, Brozovic, Yao, Miangue, Gabriel.
Inter XI (4-2-3-1): Handanovic; Ansaldi, Miranda, Murillo, Santon; Mario, Medel; Candreva, Banega, Perisic; Icardi.
There’s just over 15 minutes left to go until kick-off, so let’s have a look at how the two teams will be lining up this afternoon…
It might not be an entirely comfortable afternoon for the Inter captain, however, as in the build-up to today’s game he was criticised by the club’s ultras for comments he made about them in his recently released autobiography. As a result, he’s expected to receive a hostile reception from Curva Nord, who aren’t at all happy with the Argentine’s behaviour.
Cagliari have scored in six of their opening seven games, with only reigning champions Juventus managing to keep a clean sheet against Massimo Rastelli’s men. However, at the other end of the pitch they haven’t looked quite as solid, as they have already conceded nine goals away from home. As a result, in-form Inter striker Mauro Icardi should fancy his chances here today.
Back-to-back wins against Sampdoria and Crotone mean that Cagliari head to San Siro searching for a third consecutive victory for the first time since October 2012. A positive start to the season has resulted in the Sardinians starting the day in 10th place, narrowly behind Inter and with a chance of moving to within one point of third-place Napoli in they’re victorious again this afternoon.
Inter initially did well to come from a goal down to equalise against Roma thanks to Ever Banega’s first league goal for the club, but poor defending once again hurt the and ensured that all three points went to the hosts. Whilst today’s game sees them take on one of the three newly-promoted sides, Cagliari have already proven to be tricky opponents in the opening stages of the campaign.
Three consecutive victories in just 10 days helped to take some of the pressure off Frank de Boer, but without a win in two games, the new Inter boss will be feeling the heat once again. A pulsating game at the Stadio Olimpico just before the international break ended in a 2-1 victory for Roma, leaving the Nerazzurri in a disappointing ninth place in the Serie A table.
Good afternoon and welcome to our live text commentary of today’s Serie A game between Inter and Cagliari at San Siro.
