Commentary

That concludes our commentary of the LaLiga fixture between Elche and Real Madrid. We hope you enjoyed it!
Elche are back in action next Sunday when they travel to face Mallorca. Real Madrid have a midweek meeting with Shakhtar Donetsk in the Champions League before welcoming Rayo Vallecano to the Santiago Bernabeu.
Real Madrid come away with all three points after an entertaining match at the Estadio Martinez Valero, thanks to Vinicius’ third brace of the season. The Brazil winger opened the scoring after 22 minutes and doubled his tally with a lovely chip over a sprawling Casilla. Guti severely hampered his side’s chances when he was sent off for a second bookable offence an hour into the match, but Elche still managed to find a late goal through Milla after Casemiro’s poor pass in defence was cut out. The strike set up a nervy finish, but Ancelotti’s side were able to hold on. The Merengues go joint-top of the table with the win while Elche stay 15th.
90' + 5' FULL-TIME: ELCHE 1-2 REAL MADRID.
90' + 4' Gumbau takes a late Elche free-kick to the far post where Bigas meets the delivery, but the defender can only send his header straight down before it’s cleared by Militao.
90' + 2' Mariano gets into the Elche half and looks to take on two retreating defenders before firing an ill-advised shot from 25 yards out - which he drags well wide of the goal.
90' The fourth official indicates four minutes will be added to the end of the 90 for stoppages.
88' Casemiro heads away an Elche corner as the visitors are set up for a nervy final few minutes!
D. Benedetto
Assist
86' It's an unwitting assist for Benedetto, who somehow managed to put his header right into the path of Milla.
Pere Milla
Goal
86' ELCHE HAVE ONE BACK OUT OF NOWHERE! 2-1! It’s a comical goal but Elche won’t care! Casemiro looks to play the ball out to the left from just in front of his own 18-yard box, but his pass cannons off the head of Benedetto. The substitute striker manages to direct the deflection into the path of Milla, who finishes easily after a one-on-one with Courtois!
E. Hazard
Vinícius Júnior
84' Vinicius is denied a chance at a hat-trick as he is recalled to the bench by Ancelotti, who gives Hazard an opportunity.
E. Camavinga
L. Modrić
84' Real Madrid send on fresh legs in midfield as Camavinga replaces Modric.
83' Elche are unbeaten in their last six home games in LaLiga (W2 D4) and have not had a longer unbeaten run at home in the competition since August 2014 (P11 W4 D7).
I. Marcone
Omar Mascarell
81' A straight swap in central midfield sees Marcone replace Mascarell.
Pere Milla
Fidel
81' Fidel is recalled to the bench as Elche make a change in midfield. Milla is his replacement.
Tete Morente
L. Boyé
81' Morente gets nine minutes to show his quality as Boye is withdrawn.
79' Real Madrid are looking for a penalty after Mariano’s chip into the 18-yard box is blocked by Roco. The ball did appear to hit off of the defender’s arm - but it was sufficiently tucked into his body as the referee shows no interest in giving the visitors a spot-kick.
77' Mariano scoops a pass over the top of the defence for Alaba, who has pushed up to join the attack. The centre-back attempts a deft backheel flick to Vinicius, but he gets his pass wrong as Elche are allowed to clear the danger.
75' Real Madrid find themselves in a comfortable position with 15 minutes left, thanks to a goal either side of the half-time interval by Vinicius. With a Champions League tie in midweek, Ancelotti will no doubt be happy that his side can sit back and control the tempo for the last quarter-hour, as the hard work looks to be complete.
Vinícius Júnior
Goal
73' VINICIUS DOUBLES HIS TALLY AND PUTS REAL UP 2-0! It’s another brilliant goal from the Brazil winger, who manages to stay onside before ghosting between the two defenders to get on the end of Modric’s leading pass. He beats Bigas for pace and looks set to cut the ball back from an acute angle on the left but instead draws out the goalkeeper and chips it over him and into the goal!
L. Modrić
Assist
73' Modric's perfectly weighted pass leads to Vinicius' second goal of the game. It's an assist for the Croatia international as Real Madrid get themselves some insurance.
D. Benedetto
Lucas Pérez
71' A change in attack sees Benedetto replace Perez.
Gumbau
J. Pastore
71' Gumbau is sent on for Pastore as Escriba looks to change things up with 20 minutes remaining.
70' Elche drop back into a 4-4-1, with Boye the main striker. Perez has gone out to the wing with Pastore occupying the other flank - which pushes Fidel into a more central position. The hosts were certainly in the match after an hour but the sending-off will no doubt dampen the attacking potency they showed in the first half.
68' Carvajal immediately gets involved in the match, receiving Asensio’s backheel pass before firing a cross to the far post. Mariano meets the delivery with a diving header but the striker can only send his shot right at the hands of the goalkeeper.
F. Mendy
Marcelo
65' Marcelo's match is finished after 66 minutes as Mendy is sent on in a like-for-like swap at left-back.
Carvajal
Lucas Vázquez
65' Ancelotti makes a pair of defensive changes following the red card, as Vazquez is taken off to be replaced by Carvajal.
63' GUTI IS SENT OFF! ELCHE DOWN TO 10! It's a silly challenge from the previously carded midfielder, who goes sliding in on Kroos to win the ball. He goes through the back of the German and catches the man before getting a touch to the ball which leaves the referee with no choice. It's a second booking - and he's sent off!
61' Ancelotti has won all four of his encounters with Elche in LaLiga, with this weekend’s opponents being one of the six teams against whom the Italian has won the most games in the competition with a 100% record.
59' Fidel delivers a corner into the penalty area but it’s a very poor set-piece as Casemiro is allowed to get to the ball first under no real threat.
57' Hazard looks to have begun his warm-up on the touchline as we approach the hour mark. With Asensio introduced in the first half, Mariano looks the most likely to make way should Ancelotti send on the Belgium international.
55' Marcelo receives the ball in the inside-left channel and immediately looks to push a pass forward for Vinicius, but the link-up is mistimed as the referee blows his whistle for the first offside of the match for Real Madrid.
53' Having received news earlier this week that he would not be included in Tite’s 23-man squad for the next round of World Cup qualifiers, Vinicius is putting in another great performance today. With the likes of Antony, Raphinha and Gabriel Jesus all fighting for the same positions, Brazil have an enviable wealth of talent on the wings.
51' After receiving treatment both on the pitch and on the sideline, Mojica is deemed fit to continue as he retakes his place on the left side of the defensive line.
49' Worrying signs now for Elche as Kroos’ corner is taken to the edge of the six-yard box, where both Boye and Mojica are stationed - waiting to clear the danger. Casilla comes off his line and punches the ball away but he also catches the head of the left-back, sending him down to the pitch in a daze.
47' An early corner in the second half for Real Madrid is taken by Asensio looking for the head of Militao - but Boye is back to do his defensive duties, clearing it away at the first time of asking.
46' Elche get the match restarted from the kick-off!
With little other choice, Elche will be forced to come out and attack in the second half in search of what would be a very good point at home. With a number of attacking options on the bench in order to freshen up the game including Carrillo and Benedetto, Fran Escriba has no shortage of ways to pose the Real Madrid defence new challenges. The Merengues have only managed more than one goal in a game once in their last four LaLiga fixtures, which could be cause for concern as Ancelotti will have to decide whether to push for insurance or hold the lead they have. With Karim Benzema unavailable, the likes of Jovic or Hazard would be the first option from the bench should the coach want another goal.
An entertaining and open first half comes to a close with Real Madrid in front, thanks to a 22nd-minute Vinicius goal. The visitors have just shaded possession, but it’s been an open game with both sides creating enough chances to find the back of the net. Perez has gone close a number of times for Elche, forcing Courtois into a couple of important saves at one end, while Rodrygo - who was subbed off early due to injury - and Asensio were very active on the right wing, causing problems for Mojica.
45' + 3' HALF-TIME: ELCHE 0-1 REAL MADRID
45' + 2' The fourth official indicates two minutes will be added to the end of the half for stoppages.
45' Perez’s corner from the left is taken to the near post but it’s a very poor delivery which Vazquez is able to clear under no pressure whatsoever.
43' Elche striker Perez has been directly involved in four goals in his last five meetings with Real Madrid in LaLiga (two goals and two assists).
41' Kroos’ corner is taken to the near post where it’s met by an Alaba flick-on. It’s a dangerous routine but neither Mariano nor Militao is able to meet the ball at the back stick as it rolls behind for a goal kick.
39' Alaba is caught in possession just outside the penalty area by Boye, who wins the ball back before firing in a cross. The deflected delivery is met with a deft touch from Pastore, who puts it across the face of goal for Perez, but the striker can only send his rushed shot wayward - failing to trouble Courtois.
37' CHANCE! Boye has a sight at goal from just outside the penalty area and has a go - forcing a good save out of Courtois.
35' Alaba sends a spectacular pass across the pitch from the right side of defence to the left wing for Vinicius, who controls the ball well before taking on two defenders with a bit of fancy footwork. He manages to get past Palacios, but a heavy touch to round Roco puts the ball out of play for a goal kick.
33' Real Madrid are enjoying a lengthy spell of possession, knocking it around in midfield as they look to break down the Elche low block. They’ve done well hitting on the counter-attack thus far but with the lead and just over 10 minutes to go in the half, Ancelotti’s side look happy to slow down the play and force their opponents to chase.
31' PEREZ ATTEMPTS THE SPECTACULAR! A simple one-two pass on the left gets Mojica free ahead of Vazquez, which prompts the left-back to deliver a cross into the penalty area. Perez meets the delivery with a wonderful overhead kick attempt - which he sends just over the crossbar!
29' Pastore finds Boye inside the penalty area and the striker meets the pass with a lovely first touch - attempting to put the ball around Alaba. Not to be beaten for pace, the former Bayern Munich defender manages to hold off his man before clearing the danger.
28' Real Madrid have scored in each of their last 16 meetings with Elche in LaLiga (44 goals in total, an average of 2.7 per clash), last failing to score against them in April 1975 (1-0).
26' MARIANO GOES WIDE! A lovely pass over the top by Modric puts the striker in a footrace with Bigas. The Real Madrid man wins the battle and gets onto the ball but his nifty stepover closes the angle he has to shoot as he puts his effort into the side netting from close range.
24' Kroos takes a Real Madrid corner looking for Militao immediately after finding the opening goal, but Fidel does just enough to get ahead of the centre-back to clear his lines.
Vinícius Júnior
Goal
22' REAL MADRID HAVE THE BREAKTHROUGH! 1-0! Vinicius continues his sterling run of form with a good goal after a turnover in midfield. Casemiro steps across and intercepts Mojica's errant pass - immediately pushing it forward for Mariano. The striker uses his first touch to lay the ball off ideally for Vinicius - who finishes his chance with aplomb!
M. Díaz
Assist
22' Mariano was a surprise addition to the starting XI today - but the move has come up trumps for Ancelotti as the striker gets himself on the score sheet with an assist.
20' GREAT SAVE! Boye controls a pass over the top of the defence with his chest before bursting into the penalty area and firing a powerful shot at goal from an acute angle. Courtois gets himself into the perfect position and makes a wonderful block with his forearm - denying both the striker and preventing a set-piece.
Asensio
Rodrygo
18' It appears as though Rodrygo picked up the knock after a ball-winning tackle from Bigas, who did so cleanly. He will be unable to continue, as Asensio is sent on in his place.
16' Worrying signs for Real Madrid as Rodrygo has gone down near the touchline holding the back of his leg. It appears to be a hamstring injury as Marcelo and Vinicius come across to speak with their countryman. The young winger is receiving treatment off the pitch, where Asensio has been told to warm up just in case.
14' Real Madrid are split open by a great pass through midfield by Mascarell, but Fidel's cross from the left looking for Perez is blocked by a backtracking Vazquez.
12' Elche take a corner short to Palacios, whose delivery to the far post is repelled well by Kroos.
10' Real Madrid have shown very little interest attacking down the left, with all of their forward moves thus far coming down the right-hand side via Vazquez and Rodrygo. Mojica will be kept quite busy today as Vinicius and Marcelo have yet to get into the match and pose a threat to Palacios.
Raúl Guti
Yellow Card
8' Guti is shown an early yellow card for stepping across Kroos, which sends the former Germany international to the ground in a heap.
8' Perez takes the free-kick, looking for a run at the far post, but it's headed away confidently by Militao.
7' Alaba drags Pastore back and gives away a free-kick on the right-hand side, near the corner flag.
5' Vazquez looks to drift inside after linking up with Modric, but the alert Mojica comes across and stops the right-back in his tracks.
3' Rodrygo cuts inside and hits a powerful shot with his right foot from outside the penalty area - forcing Casilla into a strong diving parry.
1' Real Madrid get the match under way from the kick-off!
Real Madrid make five alterations from the side that drew 0-0 with Osasuna on Wednesday. Carvajal and Mendy are dropped at full-back in favour of Vazquez and the experienced Marcelo, while Camavinga starts on the bench as Modric reprises his role in midfield. It’s a pair of changes in attack too, where Rodrygo and Mariano start over Asensio and Karim Benzema.
Elche make one change to the XI that lost 1-0 to Deportivo Alaves last time out, as Morente is dropped on the left wing in favour of Pastore.
REAL MADRID SUBS: Eden Hazard, Isco, Toni Fuidias, Nacho, Andriy Lunin, Marco Asensio, Eduardo Camavinga, Antonio Blanco, Jesus Vallejo, Ferland Mendy, Dani Carvajal, Luka Jovic.
REAL MADRID XI (4-3-3): Thibaut Courtois; Lucas Vazquez, Eder Militao, David Alaba, Marcelo; Toni Kroos, Casemiro, Luka Modric; Rodrygo, Mariano, Vinicius Junior.
ELCHE SUBS: Diego Gonzalez, Ivan Marcone, Gerard Gumbau, Josema, Edgar Badia, Josan, Antonio Barragan, Guido Carrillo, Tete Morente, Pere Milla, Gonzalo Verdu, Dario Benedetto.
ELCHE XI (4-4-2): Kiko Casilla; Johan Mojica, Pedro Bigas, Enzo Roco, Helibelton Palacios; Javier Pastore, Raul Guti, Omar Mascarell, Fidel; Lucas Boye, Lucas Perez.
With 15 minutes to go before kick-off, let's take a look at how the two sides are lining up - starting with our hosts!
A win today would put Real Madrid level with Real Sociedad at the top of the table after 11 matches. Carlo Ancelotti’s side have only won two of their last five LaLiga matches, including two 0-0 draws. Despite the goalless stalemates, the Merengues can lay claim to the most dangerous attack in Spain, finding the back of the net 24 times in their 10 games played.
Elche welcome Real Madrid to the Estadio Manuel Martinez Valero and go in search of their first win in four matches - since a 1-0 victory over Celta Vigo four weeks ago. The hosts haven’t beaten today's opponents since 2013, earning just one point in the ensuing six matches.
