A comfortable 3-0 win for East Bengal over Tollygunge Agragami has taken them to the top of the 2018 Calcutta Football League table. First-half goals from Brandon Vanlalremdika (15' and 41') and Joby Justin (21') settled the result at the East Bengal ground on Thursday.
Subhash Bhowmick fielded the same lineup that defeated Aryan 3-0 in their last match. Kassim Aidara was deployed in defensive midfield with Kamalpreet Singh in an advanced role.
East Bengal started attacking right from the off and could have found the back of the net in the 3rd minute. Lalram Chullova's cross towards Joby Justin inside the box was intercepted by Tollygunge defender Kartick Das on time.
The home side broke the deadlock in the 15th minute. Mehtab Singh's long ball from the middle was collected and guided into the net by Brandon Vanlalremdika.
Bayi Kamo, who made his debut for Tollygunge today, missed an easy chance from inside the box. He received a pass just 10 yards away from the goal but blasted the ball above the crossbar.
East Bengal doubled the lead in the 21st minute thanks to a brilliant strike from Joby Justin. Laldanmawia Ralte ran down the right flank and floated a low cross into the box. Justin took a touch before executed a well-placed side-footed volley into the net.
An excellent team move resulted in a third goal for the men in Red and Gold. With four minutes left for the half-time whistle, Al-Amna found Samad Mallick's overlap towards the byline on the right. The full-back crossed low for Brandon who poked the ball into the net from close-range.
East Bengal intensity mellowed down in the second half. Having a three-goal cushion allowed them to adopt a casual approach for most of the second half.
Joby could have scored his second goal of the day when he found space inside the box for a strike but his effort flew over the bar.
To everyone's surprise, Bhowmick substituted his goalkeeper in the 61st minute as Ubaid CK replaced Rakshit Dagar under the bar.
In the 71st minute, Kamalpreet exchanged a one-two with Amna at the edge of the box and squared the ball for Joby Justin who missed the post by a whisker.
In the end, a comprehensive first-half performance from the Red and Golds was enough to take East Bengal back to the top of the CFL 2018 league table.
