Barnsley travel to face Brentford next, while Chelsea host Newcastle United as both teams return to league action.
There goes the full-time whistle! Barnsley produced a good showing, creating more chances than their illustrious Premier League opponents, but Abraham tapped into an empty net from James' low cross for the only goal of the game midway through the second half. 90' + 2'
SAVE! Barnsley have everyone forward and Williams delivers a fantastic cross into the box that is headed against Emerson, redirecting it on target, but Kepa is there to hang on!
Abraham goes down as Chelsea defend a cross into the box. It looks like he's hurt his left shoulder but he refuses treatment to stay on and help defend the subsequent corner, which Chelsea do get away.
Barnsley are stepping the tempo up now. Dike and Woodrow have seen shots blocked as the hosts push forward in search of an equaliser.
Woodrow gets his head to a free-kick delivery, but it's only just inside the box and he can't get any power on the effort, meaning it loops harmlessly into Kepa's grasp.
Barnsley have enjoyed more shots, more shots on target and more touches in the opposition box, but they just haven't been able to make the most of their opportunities.
The rhythm of the game is starting to get disrupted, with neither side able to keep the ball for long spells. Barnsley's best route to goal now appears to be via a set-piece.
Pulisic, who has had a quiet evening, is replaced by Kovacic now as Tuchel looks to control the game more in the closing stages.
OFF THE LINE! A free-kick into the Chelsea box is fumbled by Kepa and it drops to Sollbauer, who diverts the loose ball at goal, but Abraham somehow manages to head the ball over the bar from virtually on the line!
Ismael makes a change at the back now, bringing off Sibbick for the experienced Sollbauer.
Ismael makes another double change now as he tries to get his side back on level terms. Brittain is off for Williams in the first alteration.
Meanwhile, Kane is also replaced by Palmer in midfield as Ismael looks to inject fresh legs for the remainder of the game.
OVER! Hudson-Odoi shows quick feet as he darts in from the left, beating his man and working a yard to shoot, but the effort is disappointing and high over the bar.
That goal seems to have given Chelsea's confidence a real boost and they're knocking it about with a little more swagger now.
Tuchel makes his third change of the night, bringing the quiet Ziyech off for academy product Anjorin.
Barnsley look to hit back immediately as they try to make the most of a set-piece, but it culminates in Andersen blasting high over the bar from inside the box.
Substitute James stretched the Barnsley defence well and had the pace to get beyond his marker before finding Abraham to his left with the goal at his mercy.
GOAL!! CHELSEA TAKE THE LEAD!! James bursts into space down the right and charges into space, drawing Collins off his line before fizzing a low ball across goal for Abraham to tap into an empty net! It's 1-0 to Chelsea!
The game is starting to open up now, with gaps appearing at both ends. It feels like a potentially decisive goal is coming.
CLOSE! Ziyech swings in a terrific free-kick from the left that Rudiger meets at the near post, but he can't quite direct the ball on target and it flies just the wrong side of the woodwork!
Chaplin also makes way for Frieser as Ismael brings on a second pair of fresh legs in the front three.
Barnsley boss Ismael makes a double-change of his own now as he searches for what could be a decisive goal. Adeboyejo is the first man to depart, with Dike replacing him.
WIDE! Hudson-Odoi plucks the ball out of the air and shifts away from two defenders before flashing a low shot across goal with his left, but it fizzes just wide of the far post! That's Chelsea's best chance of the game so far!
Woodrow is played into the Chelsea box down the left, but Rudiger matches him and blocks the shot from a tight angle, preventing the corner and clearing.
Barnsley have Chelsea under pressure at the moment and pepper the box with crosses that are cleared, but only as far as a Barnsley shirt. The Blues can't get out at the moment.
Hudson-Odoi concedes a free-kick in the Barnsley half after a loose touch and goalkeeper Collins comes out to take it, with the hosts pushing everyone forward. They're prepared to take risks in search of a goal.
Chelsea win a corner, which Ziyech takes from the left, but it's a very underwhelming delivery that hits the first man and is cleared.
Tuchel is furious on the sidelines as Chelsea continue to give possession away cheaply. He's not at all happy with what he's seeing from his players.
Barnsley start the second half with the same intent that they ended the first as Chaplin bursts forward and takes on a shot from outside the box, but he drags it wide of the far post.
We're back underway for the second half!
Meanwhile, Alonso goes off for a natural right-back in James, meaning a shift to a 4-2-3-1 as Emerson moves out as a traditional left-back and Hudson-Odoi pushes forward onto the wing, with Ziyech slotting in behind Abraham.
Tuchel makes a double-change at the break as he looks for an improved second-half performance from his side. Christensen comes off for Rudiger at centre-half in the first alteration.
Barnsley have been brave and well-organised, pressing high, disrupting Chelsea and looking to make the most of their high turnovers. Chelsea, meanwhile, have been disappointing, and Tuchel will demand better in the second half, particularly in the quality of his team's passing.
There goes the half-time whistle! Championship side Barnsley have enjoyed the better chances in the first half, with Brittain being denied at point-blank range at the start of the game, while his strike from a corner routine was blocked just before the break. Chelsea should have had a penalty when Sibbick brought Abraham down, but the referee waved it away. It's 0-0 at half-time!
HALF-TIME: BARNSLEY 0-0 CHELSEA
CHANCE! Barnsley work a clever short-corner routine, passing it along the byline and working it back for Brittain to hit just inside the box, but Adeboyejo inadvertently gets in the way and the strike ricochets off him and goes behind!
Chelsea aren't playing the ball out from the back with consistent quality and it's breaking down far too often. Barnsley's tactical approach has prevented the visitors from asserting themselves and Tuchel's side look a little flat.
Hudson-Odoi is fed into plenty of space on the right by Pulisic and the Englishman whips a cross in to the back post where Pulisic races to meet it, but he loses his footing as he connects with the ball from a tight angle and can't steer it on target!
Kante tries to up the tempo of Chelsea's passing with some quick, one-touch play, but a terrific tackle by Helik puts a stop to the danger and Barnsley clear.
Brittain shows great determination and some neat touches to beat Alonso out wide and loft a cross in that Hudson-Odoi barely manages to hack away under pressure.
Barnsley are managing to put Chelsea under a sustained spell of pressure now. They're bravely pushing men forward to spring an attack when they win the ball in advanced areas.
Barnsley switch the ball quickly from right to left and loft it straight back into the box, where it's nodded behind for a corner that Chelsea also defend. The hosts still pose a threat on the break and from set-pieces.
Hudson-Odoi shifts sharply away from Mowatt as he skips down the right and Mowatt lunges in clumsily, conceding a free-kick. He's perhaps lucky to avoid a booking for that challenge.
There's some concern for Christensen, who attempted to tackle Chaplin with his head after going to ground and ended up tacking a knock to the back of his skull, but the Chelsea defender is back on his feet now and appears to be able to continue.
WIDE! Barnsley break quickly and Mowatt is fed at a tight angle on the left of the Chelsea box, but he snatches at his strike again and lashes well wide! He didn't catch that right at all.
Hudson-Odoi surges into space down the right and fizzes in a superb low cross towards Abraham in the middle, but Helik slides in and cuts the ball out, sending it behind for a corner. Great interception.
NO PENALTY! Abraham goes down under pressure from Andersen as a cross comes into the Barnsley box, but the referee waves his appeals away once more! The Chelsea striker is furious to have been denied a spot-kick again.
Chelsea are finally asserting their authority now as they grow into the game, showing a little more quality in possession than they were earlier in the half.
NO PENALTY! Abraham looks to turn on the penalty spot but Sibbick slides in to challenge him. The Barnsley defender catches the Chelsea striker's ankle, not getting any of the ball, but the referee waves play on! With no VAR in operation tonight, the decision won't be reviewed and Barnsley get away with it!
Barnsley's game-plan unsettled Chelsea in the opening 15 minutes of the game, but the visitors are slowly starting to get more of a foothold in proceedings.
Abraham tries to burst beyond the Barnsley defence, but Sibbick has the pace to match him and gets a touch on the ball. The defender inadvertently sends a looping ball back towards his goalkeeper, but Collins gathers calmly.
Barnsley, despite having had just over 30% of the ball so far, have taken three shots, while Chelsea have yet to register one.
SAVE! What a chance for Barnsley! The ball is swung in from the left and it's flicked on by Chaplin for Brittain inside the six-yard box, but Kepa makes the stop from point-blank range!
Hudson-Odoi thinks he's away behind the Barnsley defence as Kante plays it through, but the flag goes up for offside and the hosts breathe a sigh of relief.
Barnsley's high press pays dividends again and the ball is worked to Kane on the edge of the box, but the midfielder rushes his effort and ends up dragging the shot well wide of the target.
Chelsea have persisted with the 3-4-3 shape they used in the last game, with left-back Emerson filling in on the left of the back three and Hudson-Odoi playing as a right wing-back.
Barnsley press high and win the ball in an advanced area, but Woodrow snatches at his shot from the right side of the box and sends it high over the bar.
