World Cup


FULL TIME - Two goals in the last five minutes by substitute Kaoru Mitoma has seen Japan break Australia's heart to win 2-0 and seal automatic qualification for the 2022 FIFA World Cup at their opponent's expense. Australia will now have to win two play offs to qualify and that will provide a significant challenge for this squad. In the end it was a disappointing night for Australian football.

90' + 4' GOAL JAPAN - Mitoma gets in between two defenders and gets inside the box. He is allowed to find room for the shot and if that wasn't enough Matt Ryan got a hand on it and it went right through him. Japan have it all wrapped up at 2-0.

HALF TIME - It has been tight and it has been tense. Australia had a goal disallowed and Japan have hit the woodwork twice. Not sure how there hasn't been a goal scored but we still have a deadlock at half-time with a 0-0 scoreline. Japan have completely dominated but Australia are still in there. A huge second half awaits us.

43' Hrustic runs down the right but he is well tackled by Yoshida.
41' Asano gets down the left ahead of Sainsbury but his cut back ball is cleared by the Socceroos defence.
41' Australia with sneaky little counter attack with Duke unable to get much power behind the shot. That was Australia's big chance.
40' Minamino with yet another chance and he has the free header, but Ryan is able to make the save.
39' Australia are being caught out on the counter time and time again.
37' Nagatomo cuts it back for Minamino whose header hits the woodwork once again. Ryan is able to scramble and recover. Japan have been denied by the woodwork twice!
35' Hrustic leaves it for Boyle who has his shot blocked. It comes back to King who shoots from a long way out before it deflects off Duke and just misses for a goal kick.
35' Japan are in total control of this match.
33' Japan with another chance but Minamino's header is over for a goal kick.
32' A chance for Japan with Asano having Ryan completely beaten with a flying header but it comes off the bar and post and bounces into Ryan's arm. As much as it was unlucky for Japan it was tremendously lucky for Australia. A massive let off!
31' Metcalfe tries to cross to Hrustic but again he puts too much on it.
30' Mabil gets to the edge of the box and creates room for the shot, but it's a rather tame effort.
27' Stensness loses it in the middle once again but teh Socceroos will breathe a sigh of relief with the ball going out for a goal kick.
25' Boyle sends it in to the far post where Stensness gets on top and the ball finds the back of the net, but it has been ruled out for a foul on Gonda.

Australia must win tonight to remain a live chance for an automatic qualification into the World Cup. Should they win tonight they will replace Japan in second position in the group with one match remaining. Should they not win it will almost be an impossible task and they will need to go through play offs to be a chance of qualifying for the World Cup. Should Japan win they will qualify for the World Cup - it's as easy as that for Japan.
