Commentary

That concludes our commentary of the LaLiga fixture between Atletico Madrid and Girona! We hope you’ve enjoyed it!
Atletico Madrid are back in action in four days, when they host Club Brugge in the Champions League. They’ll follow that up next Saturday away against Athletic Bilbao. Girona have a clear midweek ahead of their next game, at home against Cadiz on Saturday.
Two goals from Correa seal the victory for Atletico Madrid, though it was anything but routine at the Civitas Metropolitano. An opener just five minutes after kick-off gave the hosts an early lead, and Correa was to strike again after the half-time interval, capitalising on a goalkeeping mistake. Girona grew in confidence as the match wore on, however, improving on their poor display from the first period to pile pressure on Oblak’s goal. A reply from the on-loan Riquelme cut the deficit and looked to give the visitors a chance, but the in-form Atletico Madrid goalkeeper would not be beaten again, making spectacular diving parries to deny Garcia from long range. The win takes Atleti into fourth while Girona sit 13th.
90' + 9' FULL-TIME: ATLETICO MADRID 2-1 GIRONA.
90' + 7' Only Real Madrid (6) have scored more goals from outside the box than Atletico Madrid in LaLiga this season (four, alongside Rayo Vallecano). The Colchoneros have scored four goals from outside the box this term, already half their final tally in the 2021-22 season (eight goals in 38 games).
90' + 5' A Girona corner from the left is punched away confidently by Oblak, who continues to be the difference between a win and a draw in the late stages for Atletico Madrid.
90' + 3' Dangerous scenes in the Atletico Madrid penalty area as Oblak comes a long way to catch a cross swung in from the right, only for the goalkeeper to bobble and drop the ball. Castellanos is alert to the danger but Molina and Gimenez combine to close down the space and clear it away.
90' + 1' The fourth official indicates an additional eight minutes will be played for stoppages.
S. Savić
Yellow Card
Atlético Madrid
89' Savic is shown a yellow card for dissent following a collision that leaves the centre-back's head heavily bandaged. The Atletico Madrid centre-back is demanding a yellow card be shown to his opponent, but it is he who receives the booking.
88' Girona boss Michel has failed to win in his three games as a manager against Atletico Madrid in LaLiga (D1 L2), drawing only the last one, 0-0 with Huesca at El Alcoraz in September 2020.
86' Garcia tries for a second time to beat Oblak from distance with a powerful half-volley, once again forcing the goalkeeper into an important one-handed save at his top corner!
Ramón Terrats
Javi Hernández
Girona
84' Hernandez comes off, helped by two members of the medical staff, with the centre-back apparently unable to put much weight on his leg. Terrats comes on to replace him late in the game.
83' Play is stopped temporarily for Hernandez, who has gone down after an attempt to run on to the loose ball. It appears to be a spot of cramp for the centre-back, whose availability for the last eight minutes remains somewhat in doubt.
Toni Villa
Rodrigo Riquelme
Girona
81' Villa comes on for the goalscorer, as Riquelme is recalled to the bench.
79' Lemar’s corner from the left finds the head of Morata, who can only pop it up and over the target.
78' Lemar spreads play with a lovely left-footed pass out to the wing for Saul, but the substitute wing-back is denied by Bueno, who closes the space and puts it behind for a corner.
76' PHENOMENAL SHOT AND BETTER SAVE! IT REMAINS 2-1! Garcia cuts inside from the left and hammers a powerful strike towards the far corner, forcing Oblak into a spectacular reaction save. The goalkeeper gets just enough of his hand to the ball to push it onto the post and out to deny the visitors!
João Félix
Á. Correa
Atlético Madrid
74' Correa has earned an early rest with two key goals, with Felix keen to make an impact as well.
G. Kondogbia
A. Witsel
Atlético Madrid
74' Witsel is recalled to the bench with Kondogbia ready to take his place.
72' Riquelme delivers a lovely cross to the far post for Castellanos, who rises high to meet it, only to receive a clobbering from Oblak. The goalkeeper is quick off his line to meet the ball but also takes out the man, with the referee happy to let play continue.
70' Castellanos takes a touch to set himself before curling an effort towards goal that’s easily dealt with by Oblak.
68' Girona have failed to win in their last eight away games in LaLiga, losing seven of them (D1), their longest winless run away from home in the top-flight.
Valery
Assist
Girona
66' Substitute Fernandez makes his presence felt with an assist 21 minutes after coming on!
Rodrigo Riquelme
Goal
Girona
66' GIRONA CUT THE DEFICIT IN HALF! 2-1! It had to be Riquelme, who fails to celebrate against his parent club, with the forward on loan at the Catalan club from Atletico Madrid. It’s a well-struck hit from 25 yards out, with the low shot taking a deflection on its way through to beat Oblak!
Saúl
Y. Carrasco
Atlético Madrid
65' Saul is trusted to see out the remainder of the game, ending Carrasco's involvement.
T. Lemar
A. Griezmann
Atlético Madrid
65' Lemar gets a chance to impress, replacing Griezmann.
Álvaro Morata
Matheus Cunha
Atlético Madrid
65' Atletico Madrid make a change at striker with Morata coming on for Cunha.
C. Stuani
Y. Herrera
Girona
64' An attacking change for Girona sees Stuani take Herrera's place on the pitch.
63' Atletico Madrid work a short-corner routine but it comes to nothing as Carrasco’s eventual cross from the byline curls behind for a goal kick.
61' CRUCIAL TACKLE! Castellanos’ volleyed control and pass on the halfway line puts Riquelme in all kinds of space inside Atletico’s half. With options to find streaking towards goal, the forward takes a second touch and invites the only covering defender - Reinildo - to execute a perfect ball-winning tackle.
59' Carrasco is frustrated with the referee after being denied penalty appeals following apparent contact inside the penalty area with Couto. The wing-back’s passing move with Griezmann springs him into space but he’s unable to stay on his feet following contact with the Girona substitute.
57' A big throw into the penalty area from the right wing meets the head of Witsel and Herrera before Castellanos gets to it, sending his effort high above Oblak’s crossbar.
Javi Hernández
Yellow Card
Girona
55' Hernandez is a step late to get to Correa, leading him to step across the path of the Argentina international to bring him down. It’s a yellow card for the Girona centre-back - the third booking of the game.
53' GREAT STOP AT THE NEAR POST! Carrasco’s switch of play puts Molina through on goal but his side-footed shot is parried well by Juan Carlos, who is eager to make amends for his earlier error.
51' Fernandez attempts to curl a pass around the defensive line for Castellanos, but the delivery is imprecise, rolling behind for an Oblak goal kick.
Matheus Cunha
Yellow Card
Atlético Madrid
49' Cunha’s tackle on Garcia lands him in trouble with the referee, who shows the Brazil international a yellow card.
Á. Correa
Goal
Atlético Madrid
48' ANOTHER FOR CORREA! 2-0! It’s one the goalkeeper will want to forget immediately as Juan Carlos’s sloppy pass out to Bueno is immediately intercepted by Correa, who promptly tucks the ball into the back of the net!
47' Carrasco’s corner shortly following the restart is rebuffed by Herrera at the near post with Witsel unable to get his flick-on past the midfielder.
46' Atletico Madrid get the match restarted from the kick-off!
Yan Couto
Miguel Gutiérrez
Girona
46' Couto comes on for Gutierrez at the halfway mark as well.
Valery
Arnau Martínez
Girona
46' A switch at half-time for Girona sees Martinez replaced by Fernandez.
Girona are left with few other options but to pour forward and attack. The visitors grew into the game somewhat as the half wore on but did not do enough to put the opposition goalkeeper under any pressure. The veteran leadership and goal-scoring ability of Stuani could be of use late in the game as legs and minds tire. Simeone will not be comfortable until his side get a second, though he will not sacrifice defensive stability in order to do so.
The first half at the Civitas Metropolitano comes to a close with the hosts ahead narrowly, thanks to Correa’s goal after just five minutes. The two sides have opted to line up in similar three-man defensive systems, which has created a tight and cagey contest. Correa’s strike in the fifth minute was one of only three shots on target in the first 45 minutes - all for the hosts - with Oblak a virtual spectator. The early strike has certainly given the hosts an opportunity to sit back and invite pressure, though it could easily be 2-0 if Cunha made the most of Griezmann’s incisive pass 10 minutes from the break.
45' + 4' HALF-TIME: ATLETICO MADRID 1-0 GIRONA
45' + 3' The fourth official indicates one minute of time added on to the end of the first half, with a little bit more allowed after the required treatment for Martinez.
J. Giménez
Yellow Card
Atlético Madrid
45' + 1' Gimenez comes across and uses his body to win the ball from Martinez but the referee spots a stomp on the ankle of the wing-back, who is down on the pitch in some distress. It’s a yellow card for the Atletico centre-back, who is somewhat lucky to just pick up a warning.
44' Reinildo finds himself in space and charges into the penalty area before cutting back to get past Bueno, but the centre-back takes up a good position to narrow the angle and force the defender past the byline for a goal kick.
42' Griezmann gets into the penalty area and plays it forward to Carrasco, who returns the ball back to the striker near the penalty spot. Two defenders close down the space well and force a rushed shot which fails to find the target.
40' Correa’s central strike from distance fails to fool the goalkeeper, who throws himself at the ball to block it before collecting at the second attempt.
38' SAVE! Griezmann plays Cunha into acres of space with a lovely throughball into the penalty area but the goalkeeper makes himself big at his near post, blocking the powerful strike and turning it behind for a corner!
36' Griezmann executes a perfect sliding challenge inside the penalty area to take the ball off the foot of Castellanos after a dangerous cutback pass from Hernandez. The striker has been effective in both penalty areas; both creating goals and preventing them.
34' Riquelme’s lovely footwork gets him past two Atletico defenders on the corner of the penalty area, but Savic’s well-timed tackle sends the striker flying, with the referee refusing to give a free-kick despite the protests.
32' Atletico Madrid are unbeaten in their four games against Girona in LaLiga (W1 D3), but they have won only one of them, the last one, 2-0 in April 2019.
30' Griezmann’s lung-busting run is not immediately in vain as he manages to keep the ball from going out of play - extending an Atletico Madrid counter-attack. The forward gives it to Correa, but the pass back draws the linesman’s flag.
28' Herrera uses his laces to volley a pass over the top of the defence for the run of Castellanos but the run of the striker is foiled by Oblak, who makes his way to the edge of his box to catch the ball first.
26' Garcia hits a lovely switch to the right wing for Martinez, who charges into the Atletico Madrid penalty area. The wing-back hits the byline, but his pass evades the run of Riquelme, who would have had the time and space to strike on goal. The ball rolls back to the edge of the 18-yard box for Romeu, but the former Southampton midfielder’s shot is blocked immediately.
24' Griezmann’s first delivery from the set-piece is immediately turned behind by the defence for a second attempt. The France international opts to play his second take short, with the ball ending up inside Atletico’s half at the feet of Oblak.
22' An intelligent first-touch pass from Koke looks to play Cunha into the penalty area, but the striker opts to give the ball back to the captain, with his rushed shot deflected behind for a corner.
20' Girona have offered precious little going forward in the opening 20 minutes, with Oblak left as a spectator. The visitors have yet to take a touch of the ball in Atletico’s penalty area which is a worrying sign for a side already behind.
18' Romeu knowingly leaves an outstretched leg in the path of Koke, cynically bringing the Atleti captain to the ground in a heap.
17' Witsel hits a lovely pass over the top of the defence in search of Cunha, but Hernandez matches the striker stride for stride, providing an opportunity for his goalkeeper to rush off his line and claim the ball.
15' Atletico look to have shifted to a three-man defence in order to match their opponents, with Reinildo coming inside to play as the left centre-back. Carrasco and Molina are the designated wing-backs while Griezmann and Correa flank Witsel and Koke, with lots of emphasis put on the build-up out wide.
13' Carrasco pulls off a silky move to get past Bueno but Espinosa assists his team-mate inside the penalty area and dispossesses the wing-back at the last moment.
11' Romeu steps across and makes a key interception on the left wing, disrupting Correa’s pass which ends an attacking move for Atletico.
9' Martinez gets by Griezmann and looks to cut inside near the centre circle to orchestrate a move, but the France international steps on the heel of the wing-back clumsily, giving away a free-kick.
7' Girona have now conceded a goal in the opening quarter-hour of their last three matches, with Real Sociedad and Real Betis benefiting from early goals against the Catalan side.
A. Griezmann
Assist
Atlético Madrid
5' Griezmann's lovely cross is the assist for Atleti's opening goal!
Á. Correa
Goal
Atlético Madrid
5' A FIRST ATTACK LEADS TO A GOAL! 1-0 ATLETICO! A lovely move for the hosts ends in a back-post finish for Correa, with the winger getting on the end of Griezmann’s scooped cross to prod it into the back of the net!
3' Girona have kept the ball well in the opening stages of the match, shifting it between left and right flanks on the edge of their half - looking for any opening in the opponent’s midfield. Atletico have used their physicality to try and win it back but Molina’s efforts have so far been rebuffed.
1' Girona get the match under way from the kick-off!
Girona make two changes to the XI that lost 5-3 to Real Sociedad six days ago. Hernandez is in for Juanpi in defence while Herrera is preferred to Vallejo in midfield.
Atletico Madrid make three changes to the XI that beat Sevilla 2-0 last weekend. Correa comes in for the injured Marcos Llorente, while Carrasco and Griezmann are preferred to Saul and Morata respectively.
GIRONA SUBS: Valery Fernandez, Juanpe, Cristhian Stuani, Casals, Toni Villa, Ivan Martin, Toni Fuidias, Manu Vallejo, Paulo Gazzaniga, Ramon Terrats, Oscar Urena, Yan Couto.
GIRONA XI (5-3-2): Juan Carlos; Arnau Martinez, Santiago Bueno, Bernardo Espinosa, Javi Hernandez, Miguel Gutierrez; Oriol Romeu, Aleix Garcia, Yangel Herrera; Valentin Castellanos, Rodrigo Riquelme.
ATLETICO MADRID SUBS: Thomas Lemar, Ivo Grbic, Mario Hermoso, Joao Felix, Antonio Gomis, Carlos Martin, Alvaro Morata, Geoffrey Kondogbia, Saul Niguez, Rodrigo De Paul.
ATLETICO MADRID XI (4-4-2): Jan Oblak; Nahuel Molina, Stefan Savic, Jose Gimenez, Reinildo; Angel Correa, Koke, Axel Witsel, Yannick Carrasco; Antoine Griezmann, Matheus Cunha.
With 15 minutes to go before kick-off, let’s take a look at how the two sides are lining up - starting with our hosts!
Despite twice taking the lead against Real Sociedad last weekend, Girona found themselves on the wrong end of a thrilling 5-3 scoreline which handed the Catalan club their second defeat on the bounce. A single win in their last five games has left Michel’s side just three points above the drop ahead of a difficult test today.
Atletico Madrid got back to winning ways last weekend with a comfortable 2-0 victory over Sevilla, but a midweek Champions League defeat to Club Brugge means Diego Simeone’s side have now lost three of their last four matches. The Colchoneros sit sixth in the table - level with three other clubs - but remain just a pair of points outside of the top four.
