Villa Park

That's all from Villa Park today, so thank you for joining us and goodbye!
After posting another clean sheet today - thanks largely to their inspired goalkeeper - Chelsea tackle Brentford and Manchester United over the course of the coming week. Meanwhile, ailing Aston Villa aim to pull clear of the Premier League drop zone when they visit Fulham on Thursday.
Clinical when it counted, Chelsea make light of an off-day to grind out three more points, and Potter's reign continues to bring success at an impressive rate. The Blues boss has taken 22 points out of a possible 27 in his nine league matches this season for both Brighton and Chelsea, but today he is indebted to Kepa's heroics and the prowess of Mount at the other end. Aston Villa's attacking woes continue, but a brighter performance may offer just a grain of hope to their frustrated fans, several of whom departed long before the final whistle.
90' + 6' Back on his feet and returning to the game, Mings heads a cross from the left wing behind for a Chelsea corner, as Villa Park continues to empty.
90' + 5' Mings still seems pained, but is at least able to walk to the touchline unaided. Villa play on with 10 men for the time being.
90' + 3' After landing awkwardly following an aerial challenge with Broja, Mings is floored. He also needs treatment, deep into at least four minutes of stoppage time.
90' + 2' Chelsea have used all their substitutions, so Silva will continue for the final moments of the game. He seems to be moving relatively freely now anyway.
90' A late tackle by Dendoncker catches Silva on the foot, bringing the Brazilian crashing to the turf in agony. That was a hefty blow, and he will need some medical attention.
A. Broja
R. Sterling
89' Chelsea's final change sees Sterling making way for Broja up front.
88' Young swings over a corner from the left, which finds Buendia on the brink of the box. The sharp-minded Mount covers across to block the Argentinian's strike at close quarters and kick off a Chelsea counter-attack.
86' A looping Mount cross from the left picks out Sterling just outside the six-yard box, but Young is able to shut down the England forward just as he's about to strike.
84' SAVE! Showing persistence after nearly being felled on the edge of the box, Sterling gets a shot away from the right side of the area, which Martinez is able to save in the centre of his goal.
M. Mount
Yellow Card
83' Receiving his second booking of the Premier League season, goalscorer Mount sees yellow for tussling with Buendia in midfield and grabbing a handful of the Villa man's shirt.
80' Chelsea are concentrating on retaining the ball; there's no real need to press now. It's a deflated Aston Villa team, so it's surely just a matter of seeing out time until the final whistle.
L. Dendoncker
J. Ramsey
Aston Villa
78' Gerrard makes his final change: local lad Ramsey comes off to general applause from the Villa Park faithful, and Dendoncker will replace him.
77' Brought on to aid Villa's attempts at fighting back for an unlikely point, Coutinho has scored only one goal and provided no assists in his past 20 Premier League appearances.
75' Jorginho falls to the turf nursing an injury, which brings the game to a halt. The Chelsea substitute is soon able to resume his midfield role, though, and the action continues.
Philippe Coutinho
J. McGinn
Aston Villa
73' Villa captain McGinn sees his number come up; Coutinho comes on for a cameo in the final stages.
72' With a rare opportunity, Sterling steers his header from the centre of the area wide of the right-hand post, following Gallagher's cross.
70' Following the corner, McGinn drifts a dangerous ball towards Konsa at the back post, but Chalobah is alert to intervene and flick the ball behind with a header.
68' Buendia has a crack at goal from nearly 25 yards, which Koulibaly blocks at the second attempt, then Chelsea are forced to concede a corner.
E. Buendía
L. Bailey
Aston Villa
66' In an immediate response to his team going two goals down, Steven Gerrard takes off Bailey, and Buendia is sent on to inspire an improbable comeback.
M. Mount
65' MOUNT DOUBLES UP! With a wickedly dipping free-kick from the left side of the area, over 20 yards out from goal, Mount flummoxes Martinez and finds the back of the net! His shot crosses the line in the centre of the goal, so Villa's keeper may be disappointed with his failure to respond. Nevertheless, it's 2-0 to Chelsea: surely game over!
M. Kovačić
65' Kovacic is the latest Chelsea player replaced by Potter; Jorginho comes on to help see out the result.
62' SAVE! Luiz swings over a high cross which Kepa is just about able to punch away. However, the ball quickly comes back in via a low shot from McGinn, which the Chelsea keeper saves low down to his right.
K. Koulibaly
Yellow Card
61' Caught out by a typically marauding run from Ramsey, substitute Koulibaly is booked for stopping his opponent by using an outstretched arm.
60' Villa Park has grown ever more quiet, as anxiety seeps into the home support. Have their team already wasted their best chances, or can they pull off an unlikely comeback?
C. Gallagher
P. Aubameyang
58' A fruitless game for Aubameyang comes to an early end: Gallagher comes on to replace him. Will that result in another reshuffle by Potter?
58' Still alert, Kepa anticipates Watkins' cutback for Ings from the left byline and snatches the ball into his grasp before the Villa striker can pounce.
56' Again, Watkins shoots off-target, as his effort from the left side of the area spirals out of play for a throw-in. A lack of composure cost the Villa striker there.
53' As Villa start to build some momentum again, Koulibaly and then Loftus-Cheek are forced to make clearing headers. When the ball is recycled, Watkins sees another headed attempt slip wide of the far post.
51' Ramsey forces Silva into a clearance which concedes a corner; after his first attempt is cleared, Bailey's second cross is glanced well wide by Watkins under pressure.
50' Chelsea have clearly been told to exert more control on the game at half-time, as they've been patient and relatively cautious since returning after the break.
48' One goal ahead today, Chelsea have a record of W2, D1, L0 when leading at half-time in the Premier League this season.
César Azpilicueta
Marc Cucurella
46' After being caught out a number of times in the first half, Cucurella is replaced by Azpilicueta in the Chelsea defence.
K. Koulibaly
K. Havertz
46' Signalling a change of approach from the visitors, Havertz makes way for Koulibaly at the break.
46' Having made a couple of half-time substitutions, Chelsea kick off. We are back under way at Villa Park!
Surely Potter will be pondering changes - if not in personnel, then perhaps system - as his Chelsea side have been far below their recent standards. Their hosts have been able to deliver balls into the box at will, while banking heavily on an inspired goalkeeper is a particularly risky business.
Turning recent form entirely on its head, Aston Villa have frequently exposed flaws in a previously watertight Chelsea defence - who last conceded a goal over three games ago - and should at least be on level terms at the interval. The visitors capitalised on the chance handed to them by Mings' mistake, then relied on Kepa's brilliance to keep Villa at bay. Though far from their fluent best, Potter's men hold a one-goal advantage - and Sterling almost doubled that lead shortly before the break.
45' + 1' In the first of two minutes added on for stoppages, Ings is denied a chance to shoot by Silva's timely intervention on the edge of the Chelsea six-yard box. The Villa striker has been heavily involved throughout the first half, having done everything but score a goal.
44' Cash swings over an inviting cross to the near post from tight on the right touchline, but Ings can't angle his glancing header accurately and the ball zips well over the crossbar. Chelsea are still being sliced open too easily, and they've been fortunate not to concede an equaliser.
42' Playing his 100th Premier League match today, Konsa is left limping after a challenge deep inside own half, but is fit enough to continue his role in the Villa defence.
40' OFF THE BAR! Havertz bundles through the Villa defensive third, before laying a pass off for Sterling on the left side of the area. The latter's powerful shot seems goalbound, but instead strikes the crossbar and bounces away to relative safety!
38' Aston Villa may have had only 39 per cent of possession so far, but their tally of nine shots (six of which were on target) is six more than their visitors. They will surely rue not scoring.
36' Bailey opts to shoot from outside the box with a free-kick, but it sails harmlessly over the bar.
34' After taking the brunt of a strong challenge by Chilwell, Ramsey is able to return to the action. Will that brief pause help Chelsea regain their composure?
B. Chilwell
Yellow Card
33' For bringing down Ramsey with a late studs-up challenge, Chilwell is booked by the referee. Some would argue that was worthy of a red card.
31' SUPER SAVE! An incredible, jaw-dropping stop by Kepa denies Villa yet again, after Bailey delivers a cross to the back post from the right and Ings thunders a close-range header at goal. Somehow, the goalkeeper acrobatically claws it away and over the top of his goal. Truly, a world-class save!
30' Yet another opportunity is spurned by the Villans, as Watkins slips when unmarked at the back post, having been invited to shoot by a deep cross from the right..
29' Chelsea gift the ball to Ings on the right side of the area, and Kepa is again tested by the striker's low shot. It's aimed a little too centrally, though, which allows the goalkeeper to repel it without too much concern.
27' SAVE! Another stop from Kepa - this time shutting out Villa skipper McGinn at his near post - keeps Chelsea level! McGinn opted to shoot from tight on the right byline, when he perhaps could have pulled the ball back for a team-mate.
25' Just in time, Cucurella chases back to intercept a ball towards Ings before it reaches the area. Villa's forwards are certainly causing the Chelsea defence plenty of problems today - at the moment ,the visitors don't look particularly stable.
23' After relying on their goalkeeper and Villa's profligacy, Chelsea are now back in command of the ball. They're going nowhere fast, but already have that one-goal advantage in hand.
21' TRIPLE CHANCE! Somehow, Chelsea survive! Kepa excels himself with three close-range saves in succession, as McGinn, Ings and Ramsey are all denied by the goalkeeper's sharp reflexes. Then, Luiz fires over the bar from 20 yards out before the flag goes up for offside. Chaotic scenes!
19' The action is momentarily paused as Young appears to have sustained a muscular injury. However, after some stretching and grimacing, the veteran full-back is able to resume and the game goes on.
17' Chelsea begin to exert some pressure, but stray balls by Mount and then Kovacic end their attempts to unlock Villa's defence on two occasions.
15' OFF THE BAR! Villa miss out on an equaliser, as Bailey's header clips the crossbar! McGinn stood up an inviting cross from the left byline, and the Jamaican winger could only steer his effort against the top of the goal frame from five yards out!
14' On the right side of the Chelsea area, Bailey just evades Cucurella, but Silva shuts the door with a perfectly-timed challenge.
12' The early buoyancy in Villa's performance has been deflated by Chelsea's goal, and the game is becoming more of a disjointed midfield battle.
10' Receiving the ball from Sterling, Kovacic lets fly with a shot from outside the area, but his effort lacks control and spirals high over the crossbar.
8' Already behind today, Aston Villa's solitary victory in the past 10 league meetings between these teams came at home on the final day of the 2020-21 season. They've lost times during that period.
M. Mount
6' CHELSEA LEAD! An ugly error by Mings opens the door for Mount, and the Chelsea man strides right through! After the Villa defender skews a headed clearance up into the air, leaving Martinez stranded, and Mount pounces with a cool finish into the bottom-right corner from close range. Out of nothing, it's 1-0 to Chelsea!
4' Continuing a positive start from the hosts, McGinn slightly overhits a pass down the left side of the Chelsea area and allows Kepa to snatch the ball away from Villa's lurking attackers.
2' SAVE! After Luiz lofts a free-kick into the box, and Ings shoots across goal from a tight angle, Mings crosses the ball back for the Brazilian midfielder on the edge of the box. His side-footed effort is comfortably saved low down by Kepa.
1' Villa kick off, and we are under way in Birmingham!
The players are out on the pitch at a sunny Villa Park, and kick-off is now just moments away!
N'Golo Kante, Wesley Fofana and Reece James are all set to be absent for a number of weeks, and Chelsea replace the latter with Loftus-Cheek today. Kepa keeps his place in goal, but Koulibaly makes way for Cucurella at the back. Though Mount picked up a thigh injury against Milan and was substituted at half-time, the England midfielder starts once again.
Returning to the lineup today, Bailey is available again for Aston Villa after a muscular injury kept him out of action on Monday. Meanwhile, Cash has overcome a knock to be retained at right-back. Neither Coutinho or Buendia start; Ings is brought in to join Watkins up front.
SUBS: Edouard Mendy, Christian Pulisic, Denis Zakaria, Cesar Azpilicueta, Conor Gallagher, Armando Broja, Carney Chukwuemeka, Jorginho, Kalidou Koulibaly.

Fourth-placed Chelsea are aiming to extend their Premier League winning streak to a fourth game today, as Graham Potter's reign at Stamford Bridge gathers momentum. After coming from behind to defeat Crystal Palace, the Blues have now posted three wins on the spin. Back-to-back victories over Italian champions Milan see the capital club well-placed in the Champions League, and they now turn out at Villa Park - a venue where they have taken maximum points on six of their last eight visits.
Amid unrest from some supporters, Aston Villa lie 16th in the Premier League table before kick-off today, despite putting together a four-game unbeaten run. While the Villans are still struggling for fluency in the final third - only Wolves have scored fewer top-flight goals this season - they have improved defensively; conceding just five times in their last six matches. Monday's 1-1 draw at Nottingham Forest was the Birmingham side's second successive single-point haul, following a stalemate at Leeds to start October.
