Aizawl FC pipped East Bengal 3-2 to pick their first win of the I-League 2018-19 in a clash at the Rajiv Gandhi Stadium, Mizoram, on Saturday.
With this win, Aizawl moved off the bottom spot to rise eighth with five points from six matches while East Bengal have just have six points from four games.
Jobby Justin (62') and Borja Gomez's (71') put East Bengal ahead after Leonce Dodoz (26') had put the hosts in front in the first half. But Zoherliana (73') and Lalkhawpuimawia's (83') struck late to clinch full points for Aizawl.
Aizawl coach Gift Raikhan made three changes with Gurpreet Singh returning in goal in place of Lalawmpuia while Govin Singh and Vanlalduatsanga were replaced by Joe Zoherliana and David Lalrinmuana respectively.
East Bengal's Alejandro Menendez too made three changes. Ubaid CK stood in place of Rakshit Dagar in between the sticks while Brandon Vanlalremdika and Lalram Chullova were the other two changes at the cost of Surabuddin Mallick and Yami Longvah.
Jobby Justin had a couple of opportunities before Ubaid was tested for the first time in the 24th minute when the East Bengal custodian had to keep out a shot at goal by Dodoz.
Just two minutes later, Ubaid was picking the ball from his net after Dodoz slotted home from a rebound after Ubaid parried Lalrinfela's shot.
East Bengal should have had the equaliser at the half-hour mark but Enrique Esqueda ended up scuffing his shot wide after a long throw-in by Manoj Mohammad.
Controversy erupted in the 40th minute as a rightful equaliser was denied to the Red and Golds . Chullova's direct free-kick crashed off the crossbar and bounced inside the goal. East Bengal players were left claiming a goal unsuccessfully.
The equaliser eventually arrived as Jobby headed in a Chullova free-kick into the Aizawl box in the 62nd minute.
Borja bundled the ball at the back of the net after initial attempts by Esqueda and substitute Kassim Aidara from Chullova's flag-kick as East Bengal took the lead for the first time. However, the lead lasted for only two minutes.
Zoherliana scored Aizawl's equaliser amid a goalmouth melee after Ubaid had failed to collect substitute David Lalbiakzara's corner.
It was the Aizawl substitutes who made an impact as Lalkhawpuimawia , who had replaced Albert Zohmingmawia, struck a firm first time volley past Ubaid after he was found by an inch-perfect cross from the left by Dodoz to put the hosts back in front in the 83rd minute.
Aizawl would hold on to register their first win of the season.
