Portugal 3-1 Denmark: Nani Extinguishes The Danish Dynamite

The Manchester United winger was at his best tonight.

Paulo Bento achieved his first home win in charge of Portugal as his men disposed of a surprisingly lackluster Denmark in Porto. Nani recorded a first half brace, and Cristiano Ronaldo scored the third after half-time, while Ricardo Carvalho scored an own goal right before the Real Madrid man's strike.

The hosts went all guns blazing right from the start and had a chance to open the scoring minutes as early as the third minute, but Cristiano Ronaldo saw his free-kick from the edge of the penalty box blocked. Denmark had their best chance of the first half ten minutes later when Nicklas Pedersen shot straight at Eduardo from the right side of the box.

Portugal continued to dominate the game, but could not make their chances count. Nonetheless, Nani's hard work all night paid off in the 29th minute when he coolly slotted home from inside the penalty area following a cross from Cristiano Ronaldo.

The Manchester United winger's wonderful first half performance was crowned by a second goal two minutes later. Nani latched onto a stray pass by Liverpool midfielder Christian Poulsen and curled a beauty in the top right corner from outside the box.

The Danish dynamite's problems did not stop there as goalkeeper Thomas Sorensen had to hobble off with an injury a minute latter. His replacement, Anders Lindegaard, denied Portugal a third goal in the last minutes of the first period when he pulled off an impressive save to parry a shot by Cristiano Ronaldo for the last moment of interest in this half.

The game became a little scrappy after the break with Portugal again being the more active team. Carlos Martnis missed a sitter for the hosts in the 65th when he failed to tap-in from six yards out, following a free-kick by Cristiano Ronaldo.

The Danish dynamite had a chance to claw one back, but William Kvist headed the ball wide from the goal area.Denmark did manage to hit back with a goal and it was Ricardo Carvalho who scored in his own net after deflecting a corner on the right by Dennis Rommedahl in 79th minute.

Hope springs eternal, but it was not to be for the visitors, who fell victim to some sloppy defending from Poulsen six minutes later as Nani released Cristiano Ronaldo, and the Portuguese skipper made no mistake from the right side of the box. There were no more goals in Porto as the game finished 3-1.
