Lesedi Kapinga took a rare opportunity to star with both hands as Mamelodi Sundowns eclipsed Richards Bay on Tuesday.

Opportunities have been few and far between for Lesedi Kapinga at Mamelodi Sundowns this season, with the wideman struggling on the fringes while others have taken their opportunities.

His future at the club appeared in jeopardy ahead of transfer deadline day, as he reportedly pushed for a move away, but Kapinga ultimately remained with the Brazilians in order to fight for his place.

Named in the starting XI against Richards Bay, he had a glorious opportunity to make an impact and impress Rhulani Mokwena…and it’s fair to say that Kapinga took his chance with both hands, to the delight of Sundowns fans.

  • Sundowns fans love what they see

“Kapinga is a baller,” wrote @Nkabanhle1, one of several Downs fans who was wowed by the forward’s quality against RichardsBay.

“Kapinga,” continued @Sir_Gqoks, “he knows football this boy. My man of the match today.”

    @UncappedLekoko was also impressed.

“Lesedi Kapinga knows ball,” they wrote emphatically.

  • Ridiculing Pirates, Chiefs transfer rumours

Kapinga had been linked with a move to either Kaizer Chiefs or Orlando Pirates on transfer deadline day, but ultimately remained at Sundowns.

The Pretoria heavyweights will be delighted they kept hold of him.

“Imagine us selling Kapinga to Soweto!” wrote @DizKid_97, clearly delighted that the attacker remained.

  • Chiefs really missed out

“To think a player like Kapinga was on the transfer list and teams like Kaizer Chiefs never made a bid,” mused @ZGoasu. “Their problems are bigger than we can imagine.”

  • Richards Bay helped him

The esteemed Kamogelo Motecwane was also impressed with the 27-year-old, but acknowledged that the Natal Rich Boyz may have made it easier for him.

“Lesedi Kapinga has had the freedom of the park the entire game and has made the most of it,” he wrote.

  • He must play more

Fans hope that Kapinga’s showing against Richards Bay on Tuesday ultimately leads to more action for Sundowns.

“Kapinga needs to play more,” urged @Sim_Saliwa…but will Mokwena take note?

    Oupa Khalanga Baloyi agreed.

“If Kapinga can get as much gametime as [Themba] Zwane, you will see that there's something special about that lad, my friend.”

  • Turned it on after the break

It wasn’t an entirely complete showing for Kapinga, who at times struggled to get involved during the first half, but he certainly turned on the style after the break.

“This is the Kapinga we know,” wrote @mat_sandawana, as the winger registered two assists, “not that one of the first half.”

  • Impressed with his sharpness

Despite not featuring regularly for Sundowns this term, some supporters were particularly impressed with the attacker’s fitness and sharpness.

“How do Sundowns manage to keep their players so fit?” asked Songezo Ngam. “Kapinga does not look like he has missed any matches.”

  • Masterclass

“What an assist,” wrote @Looney0001. “Kapinga can do no wrong.”

    Freddy Mothoa was also delighted.

“Can we talk about great Lesedi Kapinga,” he wrote. “What a player!”
