    WHAT HAPPENED?

Real Madrid star Kroos decided to leave Germany after his poor performance at Euro 2020. He desired to continue his Real Madrid club career while also putting his family first and spending more time with them. But Kroos, who has been quiet about the possibility of playing for Germany once more, is now the focus of manager Nagelsmann, who has disclosed that he has spoken with the midfield player.

  • WHAT NAGELSMANN SAID

"Interesting thought," Nagelsmann told ZDF's SportStudio when asked about the prospect of Kroos returning to the fold [via The Daily Mail]. "My job is to think about all German players. Toni is a great person who says his opinion clearly - and a very successful footballer. You can talk to him about everything."

Pressed on whether the pair spoke about Kroos completing a Germany U-turn during a recent conversation, Nagelsmann added: "No, not concretely. We spoke about general topics."

Nagelsmann continued: "I think playing Euros at home is an attractive prospect for all German players. It depends on him, his performances and on other players."

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

Kroos was a vital member of Die Mannschaft from 2010 to 2021 and his greatest moment as a national team representative came when he won the 2014 World Cup in Brazil. However, things have become considerably harder for Germany in recent times, and at the young age of 31, Kroos declared his retirement from the national team following a poor Euro 2020 campaign.

  • WHAT NEXT FOR KROOS?

For the 33-year-old, a return to the national side would not be too farfetched as he is still performing at a high level with Los Blancos. The Euros will begin on June 14 2024 with Germany hosting Hungary in the opener.
