WHAT HAPPENED?
Kansas City Current forward Temwa Chawinga became the first player in NWSL history to score against every team in a single regular season. The gorgeous 54th-minute strike against San Diego Saturday marked her 20th goal of the season. Not to mention, the Current got a leg up with this win over Wave FC, sliding into prime playoff position with one week left in the regular season.
THE BIGGER PICTURE
The lethal finisher has been a force that defenders simply cannot figure out. In scoring against 13 different teams in one season, Chawinga made it look routine. Alongside Vanessa DiBernardo and rising star Michelle Cooper, the forward fueled Kansas City's late-season surge, making them one of the teams to watch as the postseason approaches.
DID YOU KNOW?
Chawinga isn’t just one of the greatest goal scorers the NWSL has ever seen, but the first ever Malawian international to play in the league. Obviously, she’s wasted no time making her mark. From the moment Chawinga stepped onto the field, she broke down barriers and pushed the boundaries of what it means to be a game-changing player, and she has goals to show for it.
WHAT'S NEXT FOR CHAWINGA AND KC CURRENT?
With Kansas City’s playoff spot secured and only one regular season match left, the Current’s focus is to lock down their seed and make that deep playoff run. As for Chawinga? All will be watching to see if she can keep up her relentless goal-scoring form in the postseason. She’s already carved her name into the NWSL record books, but don’t be surprised if she continues to rewrite history come playoff time.
