WHAT HAPPENED?
After a six-month injury hiatus, American midfielder Kristie Mewis stepped on the pitch for West Ham United once again in a preseason match against Paris Saint-Germain. The 36-minute appearance marked her triumphant return to the field, despite a 0-1 loss.
THE BIGGER PICTURE
Mewis paved her path to West Ham United after a 2023 NWSL championship title with NJ/NY Gotham FC, but quickly saw her first WSL season come to a halt due to injury.
Whether you chalk it up to that missing piece or something entirely different, the Hammers finished 11th out of 12 in the Women’s Soccer League. Mewis' return has the potential to be a huge boost for West Ham as they prepare for the upcoming WSL season. As they bring the skill and experience of Mewis to the midfield, the Hammers hope to leverage that for a more successful campaign.
DID YOU KNOW?
Mewis’ decision to move to London was partially driven by her relationship with Sam Kerr, another global icon in women’s soccer. As one of football’s most popular power couples, they represent not just their clubs but also a voice for LGBTQIA+ athletes. Their openness and support for each other have made them role models for countless fans, inspiring pride both on and off the field.
WHAT’S NEXT FOR MEWIS?
Mewis and West Ham United have one more match in Australia, a third-place playoff against Leicester City on Sunday. After that, all eyes will be on the start of the WSL season, where West Ham kicks off their campaign against Manchester United on September 21.
Mewis will be looking to regain her form and make a significant impact as West Ham aims to climb the WSL table this season.
