WHAT HAPPENED?
Gotham FC is making NWSL history, this time off the pitch.
The 2023 NWSL champions will be the first-ever NWSL team to visit the White House for a championship celebration. On Monday, President Biden will welcome the team to Washington, D.C., bringing together much of last season’s championship-winning team.
Even Ali Krieger, Gotham’s legendary defender who retired at the end of last season, will reunite with her teammates. It’s a crowning moment for the team that earned its way to the top after a dramatic playoff run.
THE BIGGER PICTURE
While the USWNT has been honored at the White House in the past, this marks a turning point for the NWSL and women’s sports as a whole.
Gotham FC’s visit represents a big moment - not just for the team, but for the league, which continues to rise.
DID YOU KNOW?
In 2022, Gotham FC hit rock bottom - quite literally - finishing in last place.
In true comeback fashion, the team completely flipped the script in 2023. With some resilience and a whole lot of heart and changes, Gotham fought their way from last to first, securing a playoff spot on the very last day of the regular season.
Gotham FC has cemented its legacy in league history, making their upcoming White House visit even more meaningful.
WHAT'S NEXT FOR GOTHAM FC?
After an intense stretch of matches, including a crazy playoff push, Gotham’s focus will quickly shift back to the field.
They face a packed schedule with CONCACAF and critical regular season matches, plus an eye toward the FIFA Club World Cup. But first, the White House celebration will bring back moments of reflection for a team that’s aiming for back-to-back championships. And who knows? Maybe they’ll be back in D.C. again soon - this time with another piece of hardware.
