Angel City FC's Merritt Mathias announces retirement

WHAT HAPPENED?

Longtime NWSL veteran Merritt Mathias announced her retirement from soccer on Tuesday.

Mathias is a member of Angel City FC and has played in the NWSL since 2013. She will officially retire after her final game with Angel City this season.

THE BIGGER PICTURE

Mathias has played for many teams during her career in the NWSL, and has collected some serious hardware over her 12-year career in the league.

She has won three NWSL Shields and three NWSL Championships. She earned an NWSL Championship with FC Kansas City, and two with the North Carolina Courage. She also won the NWSL Shield for Seattle Reign FC, and twice with the Courage.

An outside back known for her discipline defensively and ability to transition into the attack, has made a name for herself across professional soccer.

WHAT MATHIAS SAID

Mathias announced her retirement on her Instagram. Many of her current and former teammates took to social media to applaud her impact on the game.

WHAT'S NEXT?

Mathias' final NWSL game will be on October 20th, when Angel City plays Utah Royals at BMO Stadium in Los Angeles.
