  • Forward equalized for Spirit against Portland in second half
  • Also assisted Leicy Santos' 96th minute winner
  • Johnson announced co-ownership Thursday
  • WHAT HAPPENED?

Rodman came off the bench to bag a goal and an assist for the Spirit in a come-from-behind 2-1 victory over the Thorns.

In front of a rowdy Audi Field crowd, she received the ball in space on the left wing, before cutting past two defenders and calmly placing the ball into the bottom corner, leaving the goalkeeper no chance. Emma Hayes' star player showed little hesitation running the 50 yards to a jubilant Johnson, who echoed her excitement alongside majority owner Michele Kang.

The winner arrived in stoppage-time, when Rodman delivered the ball on a platter for Leicy Santos, who fired home to secure all three points.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

Rodman, just a month removed from a starring role in the Olympics, is starting to find form for her club team. Her sprint to Johnson felt significant, as the NBA legend was attending his first Spirit game since he announced his part-ownership of Michele Kang's franchise.

Johnson is now invested in five professional sports teams, including the Los Angeles Dodgers and MLS franchise LAFC.

  • WHAT MAGIC JOHNSON SAID

In a statement released Thursday, Johnson expressed his excitement to take on a stake in the club - his second investment in a women's sports team: “I’m excited to join the Washington Spirit’s investor group at such a pivotal time in the club’s history,” said Johnson. “Partnering with a visionary like Michele Kang and her team to advance the growth of the Washington Spirit and the NWSL is an incredible opportunity. I’m excited to join the team and play my part to help elevate this organization.”
