USWNT player ratings vs Japan: Trinity Rodman to the rescue, as stupendous extra-time winner sends U.S. to Olympic semifinal

The left winger broke the deadlock just before the halftime break of extra time, securing the narrow victory in a contested match

Legendary player Megan Rapinoe and hip hop legend Snoop Dog were in the house to take in the football festivities in Paris Saturday, bringing a celebrity feel to the Olympic quarterfinals.

But the headliner for the USWNT turned out to be Trinity Rodman. After a contested match that went into extra time, Rodman scored a stupendous game-winner in the 104th minute to push the Americans past Japan, 1-0, and into the semifinals of the Paris Games.

Across the 90-minute period of regulation, much of the match was played in the center of the park, a highly challenged midfield battle. U.S. manager Emma Hayes didn't opt to make a single substitution during that period, as she put faith in her starting XI to secure a result.

Japan's resiliency kept them quiet until Rodman broke the deadlock. The Washington Spirit attacker - easily the USWNT's most creative forward on the day - was fed by Crystal Dunn and after some brilliant footwork, the magic happened. Rodman cut back onto her left foot and ripped a curling effort, with the ball flying over the palm of Japan goalkeeper Ayaka Amashita and into the corner of the net.

“Ultimately in games like this," said Rodman's teammate, Mallory Swanson, "sometimes it just takes a little bit of magic, and little bit of individual brilliance, and that’s what Trin did."

The lone score of the day, it came after a less-than-pretty match by the USWNT, but they ultimately got the job done and are now onto the semifinals of the competition. The U.S. will play Germany, which defeated Canada Saturday in penalties, in the semifinals Tuesday at noon ET. The USWNT beat the Germans 4-1 last week in the Olympic group stage.

Hayes won't be thrilled with the overall play, but she'll be proud of the fight and certainly celebrate the result.

    Goalkeeper & Defense

    Alyssa Naeher (7/10):

Composed when called upon, but admittedly, was rarely tested.

    Emily Fox (7/10):

Passing clinic. Was constantly on the ball and being used as an outlet in transition. Defensively composed, too.

    Naomi Girma (8/10):

Rock solid at the back as usual. Genuinely outstanding in transition.

    Emily Sonnett (7/10):

Filled in for for the injured Tierna Davidson again, admirable performance.

    Crystal Dunn (7/10):

Operated up and down the flank fluidly, notched the assist on the winner. Well done.

    Midfield

    Rose Lavelle (6/10):

Wasn't on the ball enough, but was key to transition into the final third.

    Lindsay Horan (5/10):

An unusually poor performance from the captain. Was sluggish, out of position and had a few sloppy errors in regulation. Was key in extra time, though.

    Korbin Albert (6/10):

A good introduction to the XI. Helped control the tempo, but found herself too deep in the midfield at times.

    Attack

    Trinity Rodman (8/10):

What an effort. Brilliant left-footed strike for the winner in extra time. Truly, the difference on the day.

    Sophia Smith (5/10):

Incredibly quiet during regulation, but was more lively in extra time. Was visibly tired.

    Mallory Swanson (5/10):

Struggled to make things happen in the final third. One or two bright moments, but overall, struggled.

    Subs & Manager

    Lynn Williams (6/10):

Was lively after being introduced at the start of extra time. Helped close out the match.

    Jenna Nighswonger (N/A):

Introduced late in extra time, also helped close out the match.

    Casey Kreuger (N/A):

    Introduced late for Fox.

    Emma Hayes (6/10):

Not the ideal performance by any means, but the U.S. advanced, and that's all that matters. Questions will arise over her lack of substitutions, and perhaps the lack of changes in the starting lineup in the previous match against Australia. But overall, a success. Biggest criticism will be the tired legs of her consistent XI heading into the semifinals.
