Saudi goalkeepers continue to compete against foreign goalkeepers in Premier League clubs

Saudi goalkeepers are holding their own against foreign rivals in the current Saudi Women's Premier League 2026/2027 season. They have forced their way into several matches, even with most clubs naming an overseas keeper as their first choice.

This week's round of 16 ties in the Saudi Women's Federation Cup 2026/2027 told the story. Saudi goalkeepers are clinging to their chance of a starting berth, battling fierce competition from the keepers arriving out of Europe and South America.

    Ghalia Imam

Al-Ahli faced Al-Qunfudhah on 15 October at the Jeddah Club stadium in the round of 16 of the 2026/2027 Saudi Women's Federation Cup, and Saudi goalkeeper Ghalia Imam started the game. Icelandic coach Thor Arnason handed her the gloves ahead of English goalkeeper Claudia Moan.

The hosts ran out 7-1 winners to book their place in the quarter-finals of a competition they have won twice, lifting the trophy in the first edition of 2023/2024 and again in the second edition of 2024/2025. Imam was among those champions in the first edition, starting the final against Al-Shabab, a 3-2 win at the Kingdom Arena stadium in the capital Riyadh.

From that starting role in the 2023/2024 final to this week's clash with Al-Qunfudhah, Ghalia Imam keeps proving she can hold down a starting spot and see off competition from several foreign goalkeepers in Al-Ahli's ranks.

    Harasta Premier

From the first edition of the Saudi Women's Premier League in 2022/2023 to the current fifth edition in 2026/2027, Saudi goalkeepers have earned starting spots at their clubs and gone toe to toe with foreign rivals across five consecutive seasons.

Mona Abdulrahman stands out among them. She remains Al-Nassr's first choice, a player her club lean on heavily since she arrived from Al-Shabab two seasons ago. Her excellent form in the Premier League made her the number one for the Saudi women's national team under Spanish coach Luis Cortes.

Sara Khaled has made the same mark at Al-Qadsiah. A starter since the first edition with her former club Al-Nassr, she has gone on to shine with her current side over the last two seasons. Alongside her compatriot Mona Abdulrahman, she paints the perfect picture of the Saudi goalkeeper in the Saudi Women's Premier League.

    Noura Al-Adhal and confidence

Fabrice Abriel handed Saudi goalkeeper Noura Al-Adhal her chance from the start. The Neom manager picked her ahead of first-choice Croatian keeper Doris Bacic for the match on 16 October against Najma Jeddah in the round of 16 of the 2026/2027 Saudi Women's Cup.

Al-Adhal played her part as Neom thrashed their opponents 10-2 to book a place in the quarter-finals of the competition, now in its fourth edition. The Saudi keeper joined her current club from Al-Nassr in the summer of 2026.

Speaking to Indivisa AR after the final whistle, Al-Adhal revealed the secret behind thriving in goal despite the presence of foreign keepers: "With hard work, my self-confidence, my family's confidence in me, the continuous support from all sides, of course this is not the level I want, God willing I will reach a bigger and bigger level, God willing."
