  • WHAT HAPPENED?

U.S. international Trinity Rodman, a 2024 gold medalist and team leader for the Washington Spirit, revealed that she wants to play at the club level in Europe at some point during her career.

The 22-year-old winger said "it's only a matter of time" before she makes a move overseas, but she added that her primary focus at the moment is the upcoming NWSL campaign with the Spirit.

"I've always thought about playing overseas at some point in my career," Rodman said on ESPN's Futbol W. "I think I would kick myself if I retired and hadn't done that. So it's just a matter of when I think. But yeah, just focused on this year and we'll see what happens when the time is right."

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

Several players have moved from NWSL to clubs in Europe in recent months, including Jenna Nighswonger, Crystal Dunn and Naomi Girma - with Girma's move the biggest of the bunch. The central defender set a world-record transfer fee of $1.1M in her move to WSL side Chelsea and was met with skepticism by USMNT legend and former San Diego wave coach Landon Donovan.

"I'm so proud of her and I'm so happy," Rodman said of Girma. "Just she is so humble, the most humble human I've ever met. She never wants to talk about herself and even when she plays, she's so unfazed by everything. But yeah, it's not unexpected what happened. I was like, 'Oh, classic, biggest ever transfer fee.'

"I'm excited to see where this takes her and how much she grows even more."

Meanwhile, Rodman said expectations are higher than ever before heading into the NWSL campaign. Falling just short against the Orlando Pride as runners-up of the 2024 NWSL Cup, the Spirit are looking to move to the top in 2025.

"I think in that last game, what we had struggled with was finding someone on the team to lean on in terms of being mentally locked in," she said. "And I, 100 percent, could have been that person. But I think the whole season I had been struggling with so much and I had been calm the whole game. But I don't know that game ... it wasn't me to be that voice.

"And I think our team had bad communication and we should have had somebody step up to bring the energy and push the tempo. So I think that'll be a huge part for us this year."

  • DID YOU KNOW?

Rodman is reportedly being monitored by WSL sides Chelsea and Arsenal ahead of a potential move in summer 2025. She is in the final year of her contract.
