    WHAT HAPPENED

While there will be no Triple Espresso, once again, there will be strong NWSL representation among the 26 players that have been called in by USWNT head coach Emma Hayes for January camp ahead of 2025 SheBelieves Cup.

The camp will begin on Jan. 14 and run through the Jan. 21 at Dignity Health Sports Park in Carson, California. While this year's January camp will not feature any international matches it will be held at the same time as the Futures Camp, which is an opportunity to look at up and coming USWNT prospects.

As is typical with January camps, which fall outside of a FIFA international window, the squad is composed exclusively of NWSL players, as 26 domestic-based hopefuls look to make their case ahead of 2025. No European based players will be in attendance at this camp, including USWNT captain Lindsey Horan and defensive staple Emily Fox.

Additionally Triple Espresso are all off the training camp roster - Trinity Rodman, Sophia Smith and Mallory Swanson are all continuing to rest and recover from minor injuries, U.S. soccer noted. Overall, 11 of the 22 members of the 2024 Paris Olympics gold medal team will be at camp, including the likes of Naomi Girma, Lynn Williams, Crystal Dunn, Emily Sonnett and Jaedyn Shaw.

Hayes has called on six uncapped players, including goalkeepers Angelina Anderson and Claudia Dickey, defenders Nealy Martin, Tara Mckeown and Ryan Williams, and forward Ella Steven. Martin and Williams are attending their first National Team event at any level.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

Out of the 26 players, 11 different NWSL clubs are represented. NJ/NY Gotham FC have six players called in, including defender Dunn who returns to camp after missing all of the USWNT fall matches. The roster also features two 2024 NWSL Best XI First Team players - Jenna Nighswonger and Emily Sams - and three 2024 NWSL Best XI Second Team selections in Girma, Tara McKeown and Hal Hershfelt.

After Alyssa Naeher announced her retirement at the international level, the No. 1 goalkeeper spot is wide open. The most experienced goalkeeper on the USWNT January camp squad is Casey Murphy, who has 20 caps. Angelina Anderson and Claudia Dickey are attending their first senior team camp.

    WHAT HAYES SAID?

“We want to continue to foster an environment and culture on the national team that is player-centric and female athlete-centric and helps the players maximize their abilities," Hayes said. “Having positive, growth experiences with the USWNT will help them in their careers and help us build a deeper player pool.

"I’m really looking forward to getting on the field with these players and the players in the Futures Camp to get in a solid week of training with both groups without having to make adjustments for the impact that a match would have on our loading and training plan. I can’t wait.”
